Physical 2020 Arms

This week, On The Hunt zeros in on six up and coming 2020 pitchers that coaches will want to take note of, and perhaps get out to see during the spring. Split with three left-handers and three right-handers, many of the players have big, physical frames and strong arms. The players this week hail from Indiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

Tyson James RHP / OF / Webster Groves , MO / 2020

James was an eye-opening act at PBR Missouri’s Winter Pitcher Showcase where he ran his fastball up to 88 mph with a powerful right arm. Imposing on the mound at a strong, 6-foot-4, 210-pounds, James features a long frame with strength in the lower-half. His compact, simple delivery gives way to an easy arm swing before his quick hand releases out of a higher ¾ slot. Aggressive out front, James showed polish throughout the bullpen while controlling his 84-88 fastball. While the frame and fastball, alone, would have college recruiters circling him as a player to follow this summer, his secondary pitches may have them tracking down dates that he starts this spring. He has a sharper, short-breaking slider-type pitch at 75-76, and shows feel for a changeup in the zone at 76-78 that he throws for strikes and flashes late-sinking action when at its best. Overall, James has a high-ceiling, and as he continues to adjust to his large frame, he may have a chance to make an even bigger jump in the future.
