PBR Summer Finale - Quick Hits + Statistical Release

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

On Wednesday we were back over at Island Crest Park on Mercer Island for our last player workout of the summer.

Summer events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future Games and Junior Future Games

Here are some Quick Hits on the prospects we saw as well as a statistical release of all attending players

quick hits

It was a senior heavy type of day as a majority of the players in attendance will graduate in 2022 and are getting ready for their final full year of HS.

One of the strongest performances on the day came from uncommitted ‘22 INF Carson Burns (Jackson). Burns is no stranger to us as we’ve seen him across multiple events as well as getting looks during the HS season. A polished hitter with a refined skill-set. Burns makes everything look easy on the diamond & continued to prove he has what it takes to play at the next level. On this look, Burns showed off more speed than we’ve seen in the past as well as hitting the ball with added authority in BP, up to 93 mph with his exit velocity while holding an average of 87.2 mph. Also led the event in peak FB velocity, topping at 83 in his bullpen with a short, quick arm stroke and repeatable mechanics.

‘22 INF Aiden Jackson (Bellarmine Prep) flashed a good combination of athleticism with a 6.88 in the 60 and followed that by being 80 mph across the diamond and peaking with a 92 mph exit velocity. All of which are improvements from the previous measurables we’ve had on him. ‘22 INF Andrew Miller (Mountainside, OR) made the trip up from Oregon and also showed similar athletic traits, running a 6.85 while touching 84 mph from SS. Miller has a wiry, lean frame at 6’1 with the potential to grow into more power heading into the ‘22 spring season.

‘22 3B Kayden Dawson (Capital) did some damage in BP with his powerful left-handed swing and left the yard on multiple occasions. The big bodied corner INF gets on plane early and connects out front creating easy lift, especially to his pull-side.

‘22 OF/RHP Spencer Gouge (Liberty) did a little bit of everything on the day. First showcasing in the OF and then bouncing onto the mound for some bullpen action. Showing a simple delivery with a FB/CB/CH combination. Another 2-way prospect from the day was ‘22 INF/RHP Rees Challman (Lake Washington). At 6’2, 160, Challman has a wide, wiry frame and some projection left to tap into. Looks poised to make a jump by the time we get to the spring season, especially on the mound. ‘22 OF/RHP Colby Simpson (Skyline) fits a similar mold to Challman with his size and 2-way skillset. Simpson showed off the raw power in BP and topped the event with a 96 mph exit velocity. Also showed a live arm on the mound and flashed a 4-pitch repertoire.

‘22 C/OF Maddox Lee (Liberty) first caught our attention in the spring when he had a productive multi-hit day in a match-up against Skyline. Lee had a balanced showing throughout the day, putting the defensive versatility on display and producing gap-to-gap contact in BP.

Lastly, 2 pitchers finished up the day for the 2022 class. First ‘22 RHP Samuel Carr (Ballard) displayed his command of a FB/CB/CH combination. At 6’0, 160 with a wide upper half, Carr has some room for additional development and size. Controls his actions well down the mound and has a clean arm path. ‘22 LHP Max Goldberg (Issaquah) presents a tough match-up from the left side with all the movement he generates on his offerings. FB/CH both show armside run & late fade. While his 2 breaking balls both offering quality spin rates and flashed bite through the zone.

In the 2023 class, C Graysen Reveal (Tumwater) took aggressive rounds of BP and looked to do damage with each swing. Consistently driving the ball to his pull-side gap with lift while creating easy bat speed. Quiet receiver behind the dish with an accurate arm. ‘22 INF/RHP Carsen Mann (Lake Washington) is young for his class & has some considerable upside to tap into. Wiry, lean frame at 6-foot-1, 155 pounds. Runs well with solid actions on both sides of the ball. Was up to 81 mph in his bullpen and it’s fair to expect a velocity jump sooner rather than later.

For the underclassman, we had 2 strong performances from emerging prospects who will be names to know. First, ‘24 Cal Zimmerman (Bellevue) immediately impressed after posting a 6.96 in the 60. The multi-sport athlete is still growing into his frame and his measurables are likely to see consistent growth over the next year or so. He moves well defensively in the INF and uses a simple approach at the plate with consistent contact up the middle. Finally, 2025 OF/LHP Lincoln Berg (Olympia) showed one of the best pure swings we’ve seen in a young hitter. Showing easy rhythm, tempo and feel for the barrel while producing line drive contact throughout. The rising freshman also had a solid performance in the OF and on the mound where his athleticism and arm translates to consistent results. Definitely a name to know moving forward in the 2025 class.
