SHERWOOD- On a cold and windy day, Bowling Green State University recruit Brett Fitzwater shut down Edgerton in helping Fairview (6-1, 1-0 Green Meadows Conference) to a 10-0 six-inning victory.
Fitzwater went 5 innings, striking out 10 while allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks. The 6-4 left-hander was consistently in the mid 80s, touching 87 a couple times. His curveball was a little inconsistent, staying up in the zone a few times, but when the curve was on it was sharp breaking and knee buckling, resulting in 4 strikeouts in the looking variety.
Fairview got on top early scoring a run in the first on a sac fly by junior Kyle Thomas. The Apaches then scored 2 runs in the third inning, which included a sac fly by senior Blane Murray.
After junior Tyler Nusbaum was thrown out at second trying to stretch a leadoff single, his third of the game, into a double, the Apaches capitalized on miscues by the Bulldogs, which must play the season without senior Nathan Stark, a Lincoln Trail College recruit injured in the basketball regionals. After there were 2 outs, a pair of Edgerton errors resulted in a four-run fifth for Fairview.
Nusbaum continued his huge day in the 6th inning with his fourth single. Two more errors led to a 3-run frame to end the game an inning early.
Nusbaum went 4-4 on the day, all sharp singles, while scoring 3 runs and stealing 3 bases.
Hunter Flower, a junior, came on in the bottom of the sixth inning to shut down the Bulldogs 1-2-3, dropping Edgerton to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the Green Meadows Conference heading into a home game against Hamilton, Ind. on Saturday.
Fairview looks to keep things rolling on Saturday with a doubleheader at Glandorf against Patrick Henry and Ottawa-Glandorf.
