Mountain Vista 15 Cherry Creek 2
In a non-league game featuring two 5A power houses, the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles showed they are primed and ready to defend their Colorado 5A Crown by defeating the Cherry Creek Bruins 15-2 demonstrating not only are they the top team to beat in Colorado, but also one of the top teams nationally.
Mountain Vista jumped on Cherry Creek's starting pitcher 2019 RHP Nathan Mitchell (Navy) early to take a 3-0 lead over the Bruins highlighted by back to back triples, a 2-run triple from 2019 RHP Sam Ireland (Minnesota), then a triple by 2019 1B Jon Zakhem (Metropolitan State). The Bruins would respond by a leadoff hitter by 2020 CF Tyler Robinson, to be driven in with a sac fly to deep center field by 2020 Jack Moss (Virginia).
Both pitchers would settle down for two innings, but then the Golden Eagles would blow the game wide open in the top of the 4th. The Golden Eagles would get three singles to start the inning from 2019 DH Clayton Burke (Daytona State College), 2019 3B Elisandro Aragon, 2020 MIF Aidan Smith. Mitchell would lose some control walking in two runs with the bases loaded. Then 2019 C Grant Magill (Indiana State) would blow the game wide open with the first of two bases loaded clearing doubles of the day to put the Golden Eagles up 8-1.
Ireland would take it from there throwing a 5 inning complete game to secure the victory 15-2.
The Golden Eagles record improves to 7-2 on the season and next play a home non-league game against Smoky Hill on 3-28. Cherry Creek falls to 3-4, and next play at Mullen for the Centennial League opener on 4-2.
