Ohio Spotlight Game: Bay vs Fairview
The Bay Rockets earned a hard fought walk-off victory over traditional rival Fairview in the Division II sectional finals, 4-3.
Bay jumped out to a 1-0 lead as leadoff hitter junior center fielder Parker Thompson reached on an outfield error, stole second moved to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on a ground ball to short by senior catcher Dan Schwede.
Schwede struck again in the third with an RBI single to right center to push Bay’s lead to 3-0.
Fairview fought back in the top of the fourth inning when senior pitcher Derek Schwarber homered deep to left center field. The warriors got the next two runners, but sophomore starting pitcher Trey Psota got a strikeout and an infield pop up to end the threat.
The very next inning Fairview got three consecutive one-out singles by the top of the order; junior catcher Jason Sassano, second baseman Josh Holloway, and senior shortstop Josh Fillkill.
Schwarber then grounded to short to drive in Sassano and Holloway scored due to a throwing error by the shortstop, tying the score at 3-3.
The Warriors of Fairview had a great opportunity to take the lead in the sixth as freshman left fielder Jeremy Sassano led off the inning with a double to deep left, for his second hit of the game. Junior Chris Corrigan sacrificed him to third but he was left stranded as the next two batters poped up to the first baseman.
Bay won in the bottom of the seventh inning as they loaded the bases by way of a leadoff infield error followed by two consecutive walks. Senior first baseman Matt Tashijan then ended the tight game with a long drive to right center to score the winning run.
Bay advances to play Clearview in the Division II District semifinals at CCC West, Wednesday May 19.
