Nevada ProCase Preview: Jacob Walsh

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

Oregon commit, Jacob Walsh, is a physical 6-foot-4, 215 pound athlete who has always had the ability to hit for average, and over the past couple months his present power has been on display after leaving the yard three weekends in a row with no doubt blasts. Prior to the Covid shortened 2020 high school season, he was off to a hot start hitting .500 in seven games after he posting an electric round of batting practice at the Desert Oasis Scout Day after producing an event best 98 mph Raw Exit Velocity earlier in the year. The Desert Oasis product was a key member of their 2019 State Championship run after stepping into a key role at first base and hitting .403 in the heart of the Diamondback's order proving he has been a high level bat from the time he stepped on campus. Defensively, he has developed into a quality first baseman as a big target with easy receiving skills and footwork around the bag. He has also been making significant stride as a corner outfielder which is where he may end up at the next level with a power bat and improving speed especially once he is under way. Walsh has already made a name for himself coming into the PBR Nevada ProCase and is looking to solidify himself as a legitimate pro prospect after the performance we expect him to have at the event.

Scouting Report

11/14/18 - Large Frame, 6-foot-3, Walsh is physical, long levered with present strength. He is a capable first baseman with instincts for the position.  He displayed solid skill for picks and footwork around the bag.  His transition and exchange are hindered by his need to throw from the comfort of a high ¾ slot.  His rhythm and fluidity will improve with more time in present frame as well as the development of multiple angle throws.  In the box, Walsh is a physical presence with a sound approach.  He strides to a slightly closed position, establishing a strong launch position and staying balanced throughout his swing.  His swing is short and efficient with solid weight transfer and use of his lower half that manages his natural power.  Walsh has a chance to hit for average and power.
