NC PBR Procase Roster Spotlight: LHP

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Sunday February 10th will feature the 2nd annual PBR ProCase in North Carolina at the Diamond Xtreme facility in Kernersville, NC.  The invite only event will feature approximately 30 players from North Carolina going through a pro-style workout in front of MLB scouts and professional evaluators.

As we prepare for the ProCase we are going to feature the players that will be in attendance.  Four middle infielders and one primary outfielder will take part in the ProCase.  On the infield side, we feature one senior and three juniors.  The lone primary outfielder is a senior.  Each will get an extensive workout in front of a throng of professional evaluators.

NC PBR ProCase Roster Spotlight: Left Handed Pitchers

Scouting Report

The No. 1 ranked player in the 2019 class may have a slight advantage on Sunday as he is the only player to attend last year's inaugural event and make the trip again this year.  Below is a look at his early form from last year's event where this report was filed:

North Carolina State commit. Strong, athletic build at 6 feet 2, 185 pounds. Athletic delivery, slightly across his body with deception. Repeats his delivery.  Easy, quick arm action using a high-3/4 slot. Works in the zone with his fastball at 88-90.  Easy run, exploding on the plate.  Curveball has a sweeping action with depth at 74-76mph.  Throws it with ease creating consistent hard arc, featuring a feel for location.  Change-up has sink working at 73-77.  Good hand speed creates deception.  Curveball ahead of change at this time.  Good feel for both off speed pitches.

Scouting Report

Michael first impressed as an outfielder with quickness and strength.  The swing can be raw but he has advanced athleticism and arm strength.  Just over 1 month ago, Michael began working on the mound, where he will workout on Sunday.  He attended the Preseason All-State event in late January and impressed with a fastball up to 86 and an aggressive arm.  Below are highlights from that bullpen.

JD Brock LHP / OF / Hough, NC / 2019

From March of 2018

Report from that night:
Average build at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, with athleticism present.  Straight line frame, high waisted. Simple delivery with an average leg kick. Long arm arc and over-the-top release.  Works level, landing on-line and square. Good leverage on the baseball. Occasional pause in the wind-up and showed a double leg kick to create deception.  Fastball ranged 82-88, settling 82-85, touching 87 later in the outing. Ability to add and subtract, going to get more velocity in put away and high leverage situations.  Arm side run darted at times. Fastball uses control of the zone, lacking command of the glove. Curveball has depth and deception with 1/7 tilt at 67-70. Command of spin waivered at times, but did show streaks of above average feel for the pitch.  Change is used as the third pitch, has deception at 74-75, with slight fade to the arm side.

CJ Mayhue LHP / OF / Crest, NC / 2019

Notes from a save opportunity in May of 2018:
Small frame and athletic. Came on in the seventh to capture a save, working out of a bases loaded, no out jam.  Average leg kick and delivery tempo.  Average arm swing works to a high-3/4 slot with the hand getting inside the elbow in a strong position as the foot strikes the ground.  Front side clears the line early, leaning to the right handed box after leaving balance.  Quick hand and arm with a fastball sitting 83-84.  Flashed a change at 74, missing down and lacking some extension.  Breaking ball has an early sweepy action, tough on left handed hitters.  Attacked with fastball, getting swing and miss on balls in the zone.
