Luke Matheny has been nothing short of impressive so far on this young high school season. Matheny only a sophomore is already showing signs that he could become a top arm by the time he graduates high school.
Matheny is very lanky, standing at 6-2, 170-pounds. He has plenty of room to grow and fill out his frame, which will no doubt help his velocity and command. Topping out at 84-mph at his young age, the sophomore has certainly been a great talent to lean on for the Wildcats of Westminster.
So far on the season Matheny has pitched 19 innings and has only allowed one earned run to cross home-plate. He has an era of 0.37 and twenty seven strike outs on the season; along with only allowing two doubles. Batters are hitting a very sub par average of .130.
Matheny’s surprise for Westminster couldn’t come at a better time as the Wildcats look to third consecutive state championship. Matheny is 3-0 on the season and with the likes of Ben Lovell (3-0) and Davis Vanderslice (3-0), Westminster could claim they have a legit 1- 2-3 punch on the mound.
