Glenelg matched up with North East in the first of two 2A State Semifinal games at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday night. An intriguing pitching matchup lined up, as Glenelg turned the ball to one of, if not their most reliable arm in Sophomore righty Zach Lafountain, while North East gave the ball to their ace and Senior leader in righty Jacob Whiteman (Towson).
Glenelg got out to a hot start, as Sophomore Logan Pusheck laced a leadoff double to left-center field to get a rally started for the Gladiators, eventually coming around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Junior Alfonse Dello Russo. Dello Russo would then steal third later in the inning, and advance home on an errant throw, pushing the lead to 2-0 after the top of the first. Junior outfielder DJ Stolba would tack on another for Glenelg in the third, coming up clutch with a huge two out RBI double down the left field line, extending the Gladiator lead to 3-0. Whiteman (Towson) would settle in after the third, eventually turning the ball over to Senior Austin Keefer (Hood). Down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, North East would finally break through started by an RBI single off the bat of Sophomore Evan England, followed by a huge two RBI single off the bat of fellow Sophomore Ethan Flaugher to tie the game at three a piece. As we head to extras, Glenelg would waste no time in the top of the eighth as Senior outfielder Todd Calhoun (McDaniel) executed a textbook "Suicide Squeeze" to give Glenelg the lead 4-3. Junior righty Jackson Kelley would come on in the bottom half of the eight and slam the door, sending Glenelg to the 2A State Championship game.
There were a ton of individual story lines on both sides in this one, but none bigger than the work done by Sophomore Zach Lafountain. The righty hurler was pretty much unhittable through six innings, before giving up the three runs in the seventh. Lafountain went 6.2 IP, giving up just the three earned runs while striking out six. Senior lefty Spencer Flavin (Navy) came on in the seventh to induce a huge strikeout, eventually handing the ball to Junior righty Jackson Kelley for the save in the eighth.
Glenelg will matchup with Patuxent for the 2A State Championship on Saturday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
