Libertyville Preseason I.D.: Statistical Analysis

By Illinois Staff

On Sunday, the PBR Illinois team hosted its first-ever Libertyville Preseason I.D. showcase at the Libertyville Sports Complex where over 70 prospects participated in this open event. On Tuesday, we published rapid analysis coming out of the three events from last weekend, including Libertyville’s. Today, we’re detailing the top statistical performers from this event specifically.

Keep an eye out in the next few weeks as we edit and post videos in player profiles and publish position-by-position analysis from this event. For now, take a look at the measured data collected in Libertyville.

MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY

Local junior RHP/OF Brady Wells (Libertyville; uncommitted) is built at a physical 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, and he used every bit of it to generate advanced arm strength, leading to upper-80s velocity. His size helped him produce some loud hacks in BP, too. From Springfield, junior RHP Joseph Crum (uncommitted) sat 85-87 mph, seven ticks harder than the 80 mph high he clocked last June. RHP/OF Alex Carruthers’ (Warren Township, 2021; uncommitted) also displayed some huge arm strength inside the Libertyville event, sitting at firm 84-85 mph and he also recorded the day’s hardest throw from the outfield. Sophomore Kyle Kaempf (McHenry; uncommitted) notably notched the top fastball velo among 2022s, sitting 82-84 mph, touching 85. Warren freshman Cole Clark (uncommitted) topped 83 mph, which was the top among 2023s at the showcase.

TOP 60-YARD DASH

Two sophomores, Jon Buckley (Carmel Catholic; uncommitted) and Bobby Dlatt (Lake Zurich), clocked in the two sub-7.00 times at Libertyville. And despite his hulking size, Wells also ran a 7.03, proving he can help the Wildcats from beyond the rubber this spring. One of the biggest winners of the entire weekend was Saint Viator infielder Casey Hintz (2022; uncommitted), who ran a 7.05. Split seconds behind Hintz was freshman Benjamin Snider (Stevenson; uncommitted), who also topped 89 mph off the tee.

TOP EXIT VELOCITY

We had two 96 mph highs from the exit velocity station on Sunday evening: junior Tyler Conklin (Kaneland; uncommitted) and sophomore Mateusz Gapinski (Lake Forest; uncommitted). Conklin has been one of the winter’s most significant revelations. Cary-Grove sophomore Nicholas Hissong (uncommitted) recorded a 94 mph high himself. It’s also worth noting that the aforementioned Wells topped 90 mph here, too.

TOP INFIELD VELOCITY

Conklin’s premium arm strength, which we’d seen on the mound earlier this winter, allowed him to unleash a 94 mph high across the diamond, 10 ticks higher than Hintz’s excellent 84 mph best. Hintz is a natural defender with loose, easy actions with the noted arm strength to stick at short. Kaempf’s arm strength showed best on the mound on Sunday, but he moves well on defense, too.

TOP OUTFIELD VELOCITY

Carruthers’ arm strength allowed him to top this chart, too, where his 90 mph throws home led the event. Junior Braden Mullen (Loyola Academy; uncommitted) was just a couple ticks off the lead. Naturally, Wells’ high was just behind the two above.

TOP CATCHER VELOCITY

Ryan Risch (Warren Township, 2021; uncommitted) demonstrated some noteworthy traits on defense Sunday, topping 82 mph out of the crouch. Kyle Odeshoo (Prospect, 2022; uncommitted) landed near the top with a 76 mph high through the infield.

TOP POP TIMES

Huntley sophomore Brandon Hanley (uncommitted) was consistent out of the chute which helped his pops average the lowest in attendance. He had a solid day overall, especially defensively. Wauconda backstop Colin Husko (2022; uncommitted) was consistent on his throws down, while Risch was similarly consistent.
