PA Director of Scouting
Head Coach Sean Leary, in his 19th season at the helm of the Mountain Hawks program, has announced the early signing class at Lehigh University. The group of eight recruits includes three Pennsylvania prospects ranked by Prep Baseball Report. According to Leary, "We graduate a handful of pitchers this spring and this recruiting class addresses our pitching needs. I'm confident this group will make immediate contributions while also providing necessary depth for the future."
Leary described a number of techniques that Lehigh utilizes to find and evaluate potential Mountain Hawk recruits. "We attended a PBR event and hosted a PBR event in the past six months. We also subscribe to the website and regularly check the reports and follow the top prospect rankings. I also believe the on campus college camps have become a great resource for both the prospect and the college coaches. Six of our eight early commits attended one of our summer, fall or winter camps."
Following is a closer look at the eight prospects that are early commits in the 2014 class.
Pennsylvania recruits
SS James Bleming, Pope John Paul II HS
Bleming is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound SS with solid foot speed (6.75 60-yard dash). He led the Pioneer Athletic Conference in 2013 with a .566 batting average. Bleming is ranked No. 127 in the PA Class of 2014.
RHP Jonathan Fitz, Central Bucks West HS
Fitz is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound righty that sits in the mid 80s. He was a SOL-Continental Conference Honorable Mention selection in 2013. Fitz is ranked No. 149 in the PA Class of 2014.
RHP Taylor Mantick, Seneca Valley HS
Mantick is a 6-foot-8, 240-pound righty that sits in the mid 80s and has touched 90 at times. He is still developing the craft and has a considerable upside. Mantick is ranked No. 147 in the PA Class of 2014.
Remainder of the class
SS/2B Drew LaMotte, New Trier HS (IL)
LaMotte is a 6-foot, 160-pound middle infielder from Illinois that has attended multiple PBR events. According to Leary, "LaMotte has plus bat potential and is a good athlete."
Rounding out the class are:
LHP Peter Moore (Warwick Valley HS, NY)
RHP Mike Palestri (Morristown HS, NJ)
RHP Frank Rosetti (Cherokee HS, NJ)
LHP Mike Redshaw (Metuchen HS, NJ)
Leary described Moore and Redshaw as crafty left-handers that sit in the low 80s while Palestri and Rosetti are right-handers that both sit in the mid 80s.
