Brett Nearing, RHP, Saline HS, Class of 2015
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Nearing: I was considering Wayne State, Davenport, Cincinnati, Lake Erie College, and Northwood.
PBR: Where did Grand Valley first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?
Nearing: Coach Detillion first saw me at a camp I attended after my sophmore year. We kept in touch until recently when I attended another camp in early December in which I received an offer shortly after.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Nearing: They see me competing and playing a pivotal role on the team my first year. Whether that be in the bullpen or starting.
PBR: What summer team do you play on and how has travel baseball helped your development as a player?
Nearing: I play for A-Green summer baseball under Stan Eldridge. Summer has improved my skills greatly. Playing against the best competition in the Midwest on a weekly basis really helped in developing as a pitcher.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Nearing: My High School coach Scott Theisen really helped along with my father who easily had the biggest impact. His passion for the game really rubbed of on me from a young age. His dedication to everything he does is inspiring and really pushes me in becoming the best me I can.
PBR: What were your stats for this spring season?
Nearing: 45 IP 3-1 record 45 k's and 1.54 ERA
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Michigan?
Nearing: Most definitely Brad Boss from Bedford or Nick Jones from Battle Creek Lakeview. They are both developed hitters and are tough outs.
