Illnois Hawks Scout Day: Analysis

By Diego Solares and Illinois Staff

On Wednesday, Sept. 30th, the PBR Illinois crew traveled to the Aurora Sport Zone complex to host our first ever Illinois Hawks Scout Day, an open event for all players throughout their program.

Today, we’ll highlight some players whose performances stood out and also dive into the statistical side of things from this showcase.

SCOUT NOTES

It is safe to say that RHP/INF Matthew Cruise (Seneca, 2022) was the top prospect of the event. Cruise, currently ranked No. 70 in Illinois, impressed on the mound at a PBR At The Rock Tournament this summer and as a result, rose in the recent rankings update. At the event, Cruise topped at 84 mph and showed advanced pitchability for his age and a three-pitch mix. At the Hawks Scout Day, Cruise sat comfortably at 84-85 mph, touching 86 with the same pitchability we had seen in the past.

OF/RHP Austin Miller (Oswego East, 2021) made his way into the Top-200 of the Illinois’ 2021 class thanks to a strong showing this winter at the Aurora Preseason I.D. Miller once again showed his two-way potential at the Illinois Hawks Scout Day. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound, long-limbed, right-hander sat 81-83 mph, touching 84 on the mound and showed off a quick, flat right-handed swing in the batter’s box. Miller had a peak exit velocity of 88.98 mph during BP, third-best at the event.

CIF Jake Staub (Plainfield South, 2021) is a big-bodied right-handed hitter who put up some of the top Trackman numbers across the board during his round of BP. Staub had a peak exit velocity of 92.70 mph during BP, a max distance of 340’ and an average exit velocity of 85.43 mph off the bat.
