Headed North: 2022 OF Charlie Evans (Pennsbury)

Ground Forces

It's that time of the year again as we look at who's poised to scale the rankings in 2020. Let's pack up and head out as we look at:

Headed North

BASE CAMP

Currently ranked 40th overall and 7th positionally in the PBR Pennsylvania Class of 2022 rankings, the 5-foot-9, 150-pound twitchy right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a controlled, lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Showcased loose hands and an advanced feel for the barrel during batting practice. Registered a bat exit velocity of 84 mph and ran an event best 6.72 60-yard dash. Extremely fluid and athletic in his defensive actions while routinely playing through the baseball. Showcased advanced 89 mph arm strength with straight line carry to home plate; well rounded prospect continues to get better. Overall skill set will continue to develop through physical maturity and strength gains.

THE ASCENT

Over the span of 4 months, Evans improved in all facets of the game and went from a slightly above average runner, to a force on the basepaths. Off the heels of an impressive summer where we saw him find barrel after barrel in the PBR Limited Series and cover the outfield from gap to gap, there is no doubt Evans will continue to rise. During the Elite Prospect Showcase on October 26th, he featured increases across the board. His 6.72 60-yard dash was almost a half second faster than his time at the Eastern PA Top Prospect games (7.17) and Evans increased his arm strength by 5 mph reaching 89 mph from his position. His current 84 mph bat-exit velocity demonstrates the well roundedness he offers in his game.

REACHING THE SUMMIT

In order to continue progressing up the rankings, Evans will need to fill out a lean 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame with a chance to easily add 10-15 pounds. While being well rounded in all facets, increased strength will contribute to an uptick in exit velocity and will legitimize him as an attractive top of the order candidate at the next level. With his speed continuing to improve, it will be interesting to see how an already above average runner will utilize his new tool to terrorize defenses this Spring. We should see Evans continue to improve his 60 time as he becomes stronger and more athletic. It wouldn’t be difficult to imagine him getting down to 6.65 in the near future. A solid top of the order guy at the next level, Evans has taken his game to the next step and will be fun to follow this High School season.

PLAYER COMPARISON

*Note: Many times coaches will ask our staff "Who does he remind you of?" Player "comps" are a popular tool in the scouting/recruiting world and we have decided to add that niche to our feature articles. Sometimes it's within the physical build, the numbers, the actions or a combination of all three.
