BASE CAMP
Mariano has been a fun prospect to follow as he has attended 4 events in the past year and a half and shown progression each time. He has a nice pitchers build at 6 feet, 180 pounds with room on his frame to add useful mass. Currently ranked as the number 32 player in the state for 2021, Mariano was a 2019 Futures Games participant.
THE ASCENT
Short and quick arm action, with fastball progression from 82 to 85 to 87 MPH over the events with no signs of slowing down. Curveball has also shown major improvement, with the velocity of it his breaking ball increasing with added strength. Also features a firm change up that has shown good arm side fade at times. Mariano has been a consistent strike thrower throughout his time at our events.
REACHING THE SUMMIT
“Physical maturity and a commitment to the weight room should allow his steady velocity progression to continue. There are a couple of mechanical clean ups, like staying more in line with the plate, that could also allow his stuff and effectiveness to improve. His arm action is compact and comes through close to the ear, keeping him behind the ball. This will allow him to continue pounding the strike zone and be a solid asset to the program that lands him. A quick jump to the 90 MPH range with two quality offspeed pitches should make Mariano one of the most coveted arms in the state for this summer’s recruiting cycle.”
PLAYER COMPARISON
*Note: Many times coaches will ask our staff "Who does he remind you of?" Player "comps" are a popular tool in the scouting/recruiting world and we have decided to add that niche to our feature articles. Sometimes it's within the physical build, the numbers, the actions or a combination of all three.
