Prep Baseball Report

Get to Know: Luca Reyes

TJ Hunt
Director, PBR New Jersey

As the new year has come and gone, it's time to delve into the annual "Get to Know" segment. Each year prior to the season, we interview several of the state's top ranked seniors to get a look at the behind the scenes preparation for the spring. To keep us going, we sit down with Miami commit, OF Luca Reyes.

Get to Know: Luca Reyes

Tell us about the decision-making process for your commitment? How excited are you to play there?
I made my decision to commit to Miami when I was just a freshman. They had everything that you could possibly look for in a school, good academics, good baseball, great coaches and great culture. I’m super excited to be playing there and I can’t wait!

If you were a baseball scout and just watched yourself play, what would that scouting report look like?
If I were a baseball scout and watched myself play, the report would say that I’m someone who plays the game hard and gives 100% effort in everything I do. No matter the score or situation I’m always gonna play my heart out and compete.
We are knee-deep into the off-season schedule. Tell us about your training, and spring preparation.
I train 5-6 days a week, it’s usually lifting, sprinting and hitting. I go usually right after school for a few hours to get my work in. We have winter workouts with our high school team, and twice a week we got 6am workouts, so on those days I workout twice. But pretty much everyday I’m in the gym doing something to get better.
Name three goals for the upcoming season.
The only goal I have for the upcoming season is to win! All my team and I want to do is win, win and win again!!
Do you have any pregame superstitions?
Not really. Other than making sure I get a proper warmup in, enough swings in off the tee, front toss, bp, and sometimes machine, there’s nothing that I do as a superstition.
Who is the best player you have played against in your high school career so far? What makes that player so good?
I’ve played with and against a lot of great players in my high school career so far, so it’s hard to choose one specific player. I’ve played with and against Caden Dana twice and he’s definitely one of the players that stands out the most. He throws hard, and has some really good off-speed pitches that he can throw in any count. He’s someone that you love to face as a competitor and it was really fun to compete against him.

Who would you say your baseball role model is? Why?
My baseball role model is probably Aaron Judge. He’s not only a great player, but a great leader and he’s a professional in everything he does. He’s the captain for a reason. He’s someone that I definitely look up to, and want to be like in my playing career.
