There are times where the winner and loser of a game is secondary. There are times where the significance of a game is minimized. On Thursday night, four Cap-8 schools and North Carolina State University got together to create one of those nights.
Chris Coombs was an elite high school athlete at Broughton HS in the mid-90’s. He accepted an offer to play for Coach Ray Tanner (the current AD at the University of South Carolina) at North Carolina State and its baseball program. Coombs starred on the field, receiving an opportunity to play professionally in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. As his career ended, Coombs would make his way back to NC State, working in their development office. In the last year, Coombs was diagnosed with ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
In an effort to raise funds and awareness, Broughton HS, Millbrook HS, Leesville Road HS, and Sanderson HS moved their Cap-8 games to the campus of NC State and Doak Field, home of the Wolfpack. All proceeds from the game are going to the ALS Foundation of NC.
On Saturday April 22nd, the annual Triangle ALS Walk will have players from each team participating. This weekend also marks NC State’s trip to Boston College where they will play at Fenway Park on Saturday as part of BC’s annual ALS Awareness Game. The Wolfpack will wear special jerseys commemorating their fight as part of Team Combs.
