Prep Baseball Report

Commitment Spotlight: Tyler Stone

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Player: I chose Gonzaga because of its amazing academic, athletic programs and coaching staff.  I am blessed to have an opportunity to join the Zag family.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Player: I had offers from other great baseball programs and had my eye on a few other schools in the west.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Player: I believe Gonzaga first saw me at the AZ Fall Classic in 2018 but after my verbal to UNM stopped following me.  When I decommitted from UNM and performed at the next PBR event, the coaching staff reached out and we began talking.  The relationship developed quickly, and the coaches came to AZ to watch me play in March, then I received my offer.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Player:  100% relieved to have made a choice.  Now I can focus more on making myself a better player and athlete.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Player: Yes, small school and city that loves it's sports.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Player: My dad.  He definitely is the number one contributor to my success. Since day one, he has been there helping me through the tough times of baseball, teaching me to never stop and the value of working hard to achieve my goals.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Player:  It was not easy....that’s for sure, but it is an exciting process that teaches you a lot about life.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Player: To work very hard.  The coaches have told me that freshmen do have the opportunity to play their first year.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Player: I have two.  First, I pitched a complete game in the 14U USA Tournament against the SGV Hustle for the win to get us to the Championship game, and second, hitting 2 home runs against Desert Mountain which is one of our biggest rivals.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Player: Jacob Berry. I got to play with Jacob the summer and fall of 2019 on T-Rex and Dbacks scout team and we became good friends.
