PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Fochtman:  I was considering Macalester College, Haverford College, Pomona-Pitzer College, McGill University

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Fochtman:  The first time I met with them was my sophomore year, and I sent them videos and was able to meet with them in person. But the first time they saw me play in person was at PBR top prospect showcase in June. They then continued to come to my summer ball tournaments, and I ended up committing at the end of the summer.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Fochtman:  I did feel relieved that I have a decision made and feel excited about my selection of school. Only writing one college application for early decision takes a lot of stress off during the school year allowing me to focus on my academics and athletics.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Fochtman:  There wasn't one deciding factor, but a multitude of aspects that allowed me to make an informed decision. Factors such as high academic standards, strong and competitive baseball program, and overall being the right 'fit' for me.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Fochtman:   I would say my parents helped me the most because they were the ones to fund all of my showcases, and summer ball expenses and have given me the opportunity to achieve my goal of playing college baseball, which many others may not have.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Fochtman:   Being an international student, it was definitely a difficult process purely because of the distance. But staying vigilant with my contacts with coaches and having them come to summer ball games and showcases definitely helped.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Fochtman:   From what I was told I am coming in to make a difference and compete for the starting catcher role. Nothing is guaranteed so I have to perform well in fall ball.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Fochtman:  Getting the call from Coach McDonald, and him offering me a spot to play for St. Olaf.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Fochtman:  The best player I competed against was Brandt Pancer who is a 2020 Stanford commit.
