PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Decker: I choose Gustavus-Adolphus because I felt that the school would be a good fit for my future. I felt like their baseball program is on the rise and I felt that I could succeed both academically and athletically.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Decker: I was considering St. Johns, University of Sioux Falls, and Luther.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Decker: I actually played for one of their new coaches during my time playing with Blizzard baseball. Coach Woitas was one of my favorites growing up and he really got me to check out Gustavus. Coach Baker contacted me separately after watching our team play in the state tournament, so it was cool to see two coaches from their school contact me without knowledge of the other.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Decker: Yes, I am relieved. I am glad that I can focus in on my high school life while it lasts rather than having to worry about college.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Decker: Being able to drive home on short notice was a big deciding factor for me. I want to be able to make some day trips home to watch my sister play soccer, and I’ll be able to do that at Gustavus. I also heard great things about the school before I was considering it, so that helped persuade me as well.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Decker: My family has gotten me to where I am today. My mother, father, and sister have shaped me into who I am today with their constant love and support.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Decker: I think I expected close to what it actually was. It was difficult to point out a school at the beginning of my visits, but after sitting down and considering what each school had to offer, it turned easier. It was also easier having my family there to talk to.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Decker: Come in and compete for a spot to contribute immediately.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Decker: Going to state last year with our team is my most memorable baseball moment. I think that being with those guys every day made our year as great as it was. Our motto last year was “The Climb,” so it was about the path we took that ultimately got us to our desired destination.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Decker: I think having to compete against my teammate from high school last year, Tommy Springer, was the hardest competition I’ve had to play with/against. He always brings a competitive nature to the field, even in practice. He never wanted to lose and made me a better player. He’ll have a bright future as Mizzou.
