Class of 2023 Inside the Rankings - Diamonds in the Rough

Each week leading up to the new year, we will be rolling out “Inside the Rankings” articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘23 class in NY and PA. This week, the focus shifts towards “Diamonds in the Rough” candidates - players who should be high-priority follows with a chance to take the next step.
2023 RHP/1B Brady grimes (cumberland valley)
The Spin: Large and imposing at 6-foot-7, 225lbs, Grimes has the profile and repertoire of an impact power-arm down the road. The righty works exclusively downhill and has seen velocity rise into the mid, to upper 80’s (T88 mph), with lots of trust in a diving 72-74 mph splitter thrown at fastball arm-speed. The mechanics are clean with little wasted movement allowing for an “easy” feel to the delivery at release. A jumpy, heavy fastball has limited opposing hitters in our few live looks, with good extension on the front-side. This has the makings of a late bloomer that can garner plenty of interest in the Northeast.
The Performance: 16U Mid-Atlantic National Qualifier July 8 - July 10 | The righty commanded three pitches (FB, CB, SPL) generating weak contact with strike-throwing capabilities. Ran it up to 86 mph on this date with more of an emphasis on attacking the zone early, navigating with minimal issues.
