Central Coast Open: Pitcher Analysis

Blaine Clemmens
Northern California Director of Scouting

The Central Coast Open Showcase took place at Cabrillo College in Aptos (CA) and was open to players from 2019-2022 classes. The event featured 50+ players, some of whom are highly ranked and rising, as well as some of the top uncommitted players in Northern California. The participants were put through a pro-style workout that saw them run the 60 yard dash, exit velocity hitting station, on-field BP, and a defensive workout before the pitchers threw their bullpens to close out the event.

As part of our coverage of the event we will continue to break down all the data, roll out stats, content, reports, and videos from the event. Today we feature the pitchers.

NOTE: Click on players name to see video from the event and any previous scouting reports and videos. Many of these players also participated as position players and those reports were posted in that positional analysis. On Wednesday we will roll out the Top Prospects from this event.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-10, 155-pounds, wiry lean and young body type. Arm flashed best on the mound as he works from a simple delivery keeping his hands at the waist before showing a slight turn with front knee and front shoulder tuck. The arm has a longer action on backside with quickness to get to mid-3/4 release point. Good rhythm, good direction and lower body stability, able to get to quality extension and manipulate the ball at release. Stuff comes out pretty easily and more velocity should come as he gets stronger. Pitchability looked to be a plus attribute. Fastball (79-81 mph) with life and natural sink, curveball (68-72 mph) with 11/5 shape, late action and above average bite, throws it with feel as well. It's a good curveball. Change-up (71-74 mph) also an above average offering, showed feel and threw with good arm speed off his fastball look. Pitch maker and a confident one at that. Competed as a two-way player, INF/P.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-0, 160-pounds, Lean and athletically built with sloping shoulders and good physical projectability. Delivery starts with hands mid-chest before drop to waist and back up with the high front knee. Has a slight tuck where arm gets out early and stabs back with good control of his arm action before mid-3/4 release point showing a very quick arm that creates angles to lower half of zone. Maintained balance and stability throughout delivery, good direction and good finish, calm head and arm works easily around body. Fastball movement was fair but some life into the zone (81-84 mph), curveball with 11/5 action with occasionally late bite (66-67 mph), the longer he can hold that release the better the life was. Change-up (71-74 mph) with occasional above average feel, throws it confidently with aggressive arm action. Three quality pitches, good body, good mechanics, he's got a shot to make a name for himself this spring.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, long and lanky, outstanding body type, really a prototypical body type. Large frame that could add more strength without taking away from profile. On the mound works with a simple delivery where he shows a slight knee lift and tuck while slightly turning before quickly rotating down the hill; throws his front arm and glove at the catcher adding some deception with the high front elbow. Quick easy long arm that looks like it has more coming before getting to mid-3/4 release point. Good rhythm and timing with lower body working well. Confident pitcher. Fastball (81-83 mph) with some riding life on occasion, arm speed is better than the velocity he was reaching. Slider is a good pitch (68-72 mph) that he threw with feel, big sweeping action capable of getting swings and misses, occasionally had late bite. Change-up (73-75 mph) also a quality offering and potentially a plus offering for him. Threw it with well above average feel, buried it with late diving action.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-9, 150-pounds though appears to be a bit taller and stronger than listed size, put together well with athletic and streamlined proportions. One of the fastest times at the even running a 7.06 60 yd dash. Impressive on the mound as well and if only knew of him as a pitcher he certainly qualifies as an uncommitted left-handed pitcher to know of. Athletic delivery with rhythm and good arm speed. High-3/4 slot approaching overhand. Good direction and balance throughout. Aggressive stride given his height and that allows his stuff to play up nicely. Sling type arm action, clears front him well and is able to get his hand in great position at release point. Both fastball (83-85, T86 mph) and curveball (68-70 mph) had life and feel, fastball with run and ability to get to glove side as well, curveball with snap bite and tilt. Ability to bury that pitch and usable to right or left-handed hitters. Also showed a slider though the curveball is much better. Did not show a change-up. got around the slider release point, just threw it harder than the curveball but with less action and bite. If there is ever a usable change-up in his arsenal then he's got a shot to pitch quite effectively at the college level. Competed as a two-way player, OF/LHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-3, 155-pounds, lean and long lanky body type. On the mound he works with a shorter arm action keeping his hands mid chest before getting to a high-3/4 release point. His delivery starts with a wider side step and lower knee while utilizing a slight pause before drive down the hill and finishing with soft heel strike on a soft front knee. Tilts front shoulder up to hide the ball for a bit. Lower body not incorporated as much as it could be. All parts of delivery worked with timing and balance though lacked explosiveness. Calm and measured tempo, maintained calm head. Easy long arm action with elbow inverted. Fastball fair life (75-76 mph), rolling action to curveball (58-60 mph), change-up was a forkball that came out decently and some late tumble action when he got to optimal extension (62-64 mph). Competed as a two-way player, 1B/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, long lean and strong 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, built like an athlete, previously a standout football player, overhand slot, has good arm speed, some depth on backside before bringing hand up near head, abbreviated stride looks like it could elongate a bit. Has a strong lower half though could sync up timing of lower and upper half better. Fairly quick paced delivery, somewhat rushed. Works with good direction down the slope, fastball life was fair (83-85 mph). Secondary pitches came out with early release due to timing of delivery on this day, both curveball (70-71 mph) and change-up (78-79 mph) were consistently up. Body, arm strength/speed and athleticism are all present and he should be seen next spring.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-9, 150-pounds, lean and lanky young body type, plenty of time to gain strength on his fame as he's just started his freshman year. Mid-3/4 slot, clean easy arm action, quiet on the backside, takes elbow behind body a bit on the backside, can be a little softer out of his glove. Delivery starts with a wide side-step and early crunch at the peak of his delivery before going downhill with shorter stride. Good direction initially, good hips though can stay closed a bit longer, lower half works well with good stability. Utilizes a lot of rotational force and times where he will spin off the front side with some slight falling action to 1st base line and finishes somewhat upright. Displayed some quality life on the fastball with occasional riding action (74-76 mph), curveball (59-62 mph) action was limited as he threw through the break a bit. Change-up was good and his best pitch, showed feel and got to best extension with that pitch (66-69 mph). Good freshman arm and delivery, one to follow in 2022 class on the mound. Competed as a two-way player, OF/P.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 145-pounds, lean body type with some present strength. On the mound he worked with a simple delivery that has his hands working up and down to the waist before lifting with the front knee while the arm stabs down then quickly gets to a high-3/4 release point. The arm produces late speed while driving down the hill where he maintained good direction. Gains ground in his delivery with good timing of upper and lower half. There is also some tempo changes in his delivery that can create deception. Fastball was fairly straight (74-75 mph), curveball (65-66 mph) with slider type spin early but improved shape, action and depth when he was in the stretch. Change-up (66-68 mph) with some feel and threw with good tempo though most were thrown a little short. He has a good chance to come on as a pitcher down the road with his delivery and arm, size and strength gains will be important. Competed as a two-way player, MIF/P.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, Prototypical body with large frame showing tight waist and strength throughout body. As impressive on the mound as he was as a position player, a 2020 to know of for sure. On the mound the arm was very impressive working with life and quickness utilizing a longer action with some wrist curl on backside before getting to a mid-3/4 release point. The delivery starts with hands low at the waist and slight wrist turn before utilizing strong back leg drive to create excellent angles to lower part of the zone. Hides ball for a bit before attacking with good arm speed. Live body with some slight cross body stride. Makes an aggressive move through release, spins off of fastball release but better lower body stability with secondary offerings. Feels like he is in attack mode and confident. Fastball (83-86 mph) with life and quickness, curveball (71-72 mph) with quality spin and bite, definitely a usable pitch. Change-up (74-76 mph) comes out easy with feel and good finish. Observed as a pitcher alone is a highly recruitable 2020 grad, as he is on the position player side (3B).

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-0, 220-pounds, large frame with some strength showing. On the mound the arm was better than as a position player as he keeps his hands at the waist as they stay behind his high front knee. The simple delivery allows his compact arm to get to high-3/4 slot before a strong drive down the hill. Arm action is shorter and he hides the ball well. Slight cross body stride. Moves down the slope with purpose. Good arm speed and there is some life/power in the body that he can work to shape. Fastball (79-82) with life that can run in on a right-handed hitter, that pitch plays well off his change-up (76-78 mph) that he threw with some occasional feel. Curveball (67-70 mph) was released a bit early with fair spin. There likely is a better breaking ball in there, perhaps a slider given his slot, hand at release and delivery tempo. Competed as a two-way player, RHP/1B.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 145-pounds, good build and well-proportioned throughout, some strength now but good body agility and size and strength are solid for his age. Easy working arm from 3/4 slot, loose quick arm, his delivery works with a simple step/turn keeping himself tall with an easy controlled and high knee lift before dropping and driving down the hill. Good rhythm and body control, calm head throughout, good delivery. He showed off an impressive three pitch mix for his young age and looks to have a chance to throw hard someday. Fastball (75-76 mph) with good life, curveball (59-62 mph) improved as he worked into session and when his hand traveled further, showed deft feel of the change-up (63-66 mph). Good 2022 to follow. Competed as a two-way player, RHP/1B.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 152-pounds, lean wiry body type. Overhand slot, long backside, aggressive out of the glove with arm swing toward 1st base line, good direction down the slope, lands closed, pretty short and controlled stride, good body control, got shot to develop quality stuff. Fastball with occasional good angle and some length, curveball 12/5 type break and rolling action displayed some feel of CB, best pitch is change-up, dive and fade action, good angle, keeps down, velocity and arm action played well off the fastball. Competed as a two-way player, C/P.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 140-pounds, good frame on younger player, shaped well. Overhand slot, short backside arm action, maintained good direction down the slope. Calm head, short stride, decent body control, repeatable delivery. Fastball was straight (68-71 mph), best pitch was change-up that had some occasional cut action (61-62 mph), kept change-up down and threw with quality arm speed. Curveball spin was fair (60-63 mph), more extension and possibly more grip pressure would add spin and action to that pitch. Competed as a two-way player, OF/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-7, 150-pounds, plays much bigger than listed size, athletically proportioned with strength throughout yet maintains good athleticism in all he did. One of better all-around uncommitted seniors (OF) in this region. Compact athletic build, overhand slot, easy quick arm action, good rhythm to delivery and his tempo. Good direction down the slope though spins off through extension, taking away some life. More lower body stability will allow for more extension and more life on all pitches. Fastball fairly straight with occasional slight cut (76-79 mph), curveball got better as he worked into the session, 11/5 shape with rolling action (65-66 mph). Change-up was best pitch (68-74 mph) as he threw it with feel and occasionally plus feel. Maintained arm speed consistent with his fastball. Competed as a two-way player, OF/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 130-pounds, lean athletic build on a talented young player who looks to be a 2022 to follow. One of the fastest runners at the event with 7.06 60 yd dash. Rhythmic tall and fall delivery, overhand slot, long easy arm action on backside and through to extension. Simple delivery in regard to hands as they stay essentially where they start until separation. Maintains good stability and balance and direction, athletic delivery he can repeat. Lower body can provide more power with timing and gathering over the rubber. Does yank head a bit off line due to the high release. Fastball had some length through the zone (76-78 mph), curveball was 12/6 shape though smaller in terms of the amount of bite/break, sort of a tilted slider (66-68 mph), firm change-up (74-75 mph) with occasional run. Certainly has a chance to develop into a high quality pitching prospect. Competed as a two way player, OF/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, strong physical build that still has room for tightening as he matures. On the mound worked from a tall stance with mid chest glove that lifts with high front knee. Delivery works as drop and drive allowing long circular backside arm action to get down about hip deep and out before quickly getting to a high-3/4 release point. Flashed quality stuff with times where he turns off the front leg. Some slight cross body stride, there is some effort but the arm works and the body is good. Hides fastball (78-82 mph) pretty well and there is some length. Flashed solid spin on curveball (66-68 mph) and when he was on-time there was tilt on that pitch. Showed feel of change-up (71-72 mph) with some late fade. Three pitches with feel future looks bright on the mound. Competed as  two-way player and showed ability both ways, RHP/OF.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 6-foot-3, 170-pounds, strong physical body with current strength and large frame that can continue to mature, built well for the position. On the mound worked with intent from a large side step where the hands work in and out of the glove at his waist before a high front knee and hip turn create deception. Compact and quick arm gets to high-3/4 release point where he finishes high over a stiff front leg. Has a quick lower body tempo that could be a little more controlled for better power and overall feel. Short stride given his height as he looks to be working to really get out to extension. Fastball (81-84 mph) with heavy action and some sink, chance to be a quality fastball. Curveball (72-73 mph) with action deep into the zone and good tilt, it's a swing and miss and/or lock-up type breaker with 11/6 shape. Change-up (75-76 mph) also a quality secondary pitch he threw with feel and good arm speed off the fastball look. Chance to have three good pitches and as velocity spikes he could move steadily up the recruiting lists of 2020 right-handed pitchers.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-0, 180-pounds, sturdy frame with chance to pack on size and strength in the coming years. On the mound works with his hands at the waist that lift up on front knee before a glove tap allows the longer action to work to a wide 3/4 release point. Controlled and fluid delivery. Good tempo and balance. Lower half is stable and good on-line direction, lands slightly closed and creates some leverage with on-line extension. Smooth arm action with fastball (72-73 mph) that he occasionally lost to the arm side. No breaking ball, threw a split-finger fastball (64-67 mph) with some falling action and kept down. Change-up (66-68 mph) that he works to turn over. Stuff is a bit short but the delivery, arm speed and his body type could all lead to progression on the mound. Competed as a two-way player, 1B/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, big frame, ample room to pack on size and strength that could translate to more power down the road. On the mound works from a simple delivery with hands starting at waist and showing a slight lift on the front knee. Has slight rock into back hip before long actions get to high-3/4 release point; times where recoils when finishing with negative movement away from target. Soft land on front side which causes some loss of energy build-up. Fastball (70-72 mph) could be more aggressive with better extension to create some length. Curveball (57-59 mph) with 11/6 type shape and early cast-type release, there is semblance of appropriate shape. Change-up (63-64 mph) was his best pitch with some down/fade action. Competed as a two-way player, 1B/RHP.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-0, 165-pounds, younger body type, good frame to add size and strength in coming years. On the mound delivery starts on wide step to rocker with long actions down by the backside then getting quickly up to an overhand slot that looks a little unnatural and a bit forced as he pulls his head off line to get his arm through. Can work to create more rhythm/smoothness and better timing by working to stay over the rubber longer. Good direction down slope though with heel strike and early front hip. Fastball (72-74 mph) with fair movement, 12/5 curveball (59-63 mph) with rolling tumble action. Best pitch was change-up (64-65 mph) with some feel and he kept that pitch down. Competed as a two-way player, RHP/OF.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-1, 150-pounds, lanky body, long and still maturing. Lanky body, long and still maturing. On the mound starts with wide hands that stay wide and turn with a high front knee where arm gets down and out early as he leans back over the rubber before getting to shorter arm action and high-3/4 release. Heel strike with negative momentum move through deceleration. Lower body strength and stability are areas of improvement that will enhance all. Fastball life was fair and was up in zone (74-76 mph), 11/6 type curveball (63-65 mph) break with fair spin and rolling action, timing of hand to optimal release point flashed as a positive as he warmed, change-up slipped out a little early and had occasional dying/fade (67-70 mph). Competed as a two-way player, RHP/1B.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 152-pounds, young athletic frame, lean body, well-proportioned. High-3/4 slot approaching overhand. Crouched over backside on the rubber and methodical delivery. Does have balance and good body control, good direction down slope though makes a negative move with body as he gets to deceleration, falling off and back. More front side glove stability and energy through the catcher would be an improvement. Fastball sailed (69-72 mph) and struggled a bit for feel. Delivery is of a slower tempo but he also did rush a bit between pitches. Curveball with slider spin (63-64 mph), tight grip on change-up (65-67 mph) that was often short. Overall needs more development time and a looser more athletic delivery let his stuff live better. Competed as a two-way player, RHP/OF.

Scouting Report

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-9, 185-pounds, thicker proportions, stocky with present strong muscles throughout with tight waist. On the mound utilizes a wide stance with hands mid chest out away from the body before simple side step delivery allows catcher like arm to get out long in the back while staying behind a high front knee. Goal post type arm swing to a high-3/4 release with limited angle down in zone. Can work to create more front side leverage with his lower body. Fastball (73-74, occ 77-78 mph) occasionally with some angle. fair spin on curveball (62 mph) though creates good shape, more aggressive arm speed would help. Change-up (67-68 mph) that he kept down and had some cut action. Competed as a two-way player, 3B/P.
