9th Annual Puma JC Classic- Day 1

With five games each at 10:00 am, 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm there was non-stop action involving 15 of the top junior college programs in the Midwest in this year’s Puma Classic. Highlights from the first day included:


Jackson Bennett, 6’4/220, FR, RHP, Kirkwood CC, IA
Large, strong bodied righty. Throws from high slot for solid down angle. FB 88-89 mph. Below average slider 76-77 mph.

Jakob Brustoski, 6’2/240, SO, LHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Physical bodied lefty with big arm strength and a 93-95 mph FB. Average SL 84-86. Two years ago sat 82-84 mph as a high school senior. Now has premium velocity from the left side. Potential for top 10 round consideration in 2019 draft. Transfer from Youngstown State.

 

Cam Cowan, 6’5/245, SO, RHP, Kirkwood CC, IA
Extra large bodied righty with open landing. FB 87-90 mph. Mixed in a flat slider at 74-76 mph. Currently uncommitted.

Kolby Dewhirst, 6’2/185, FR, RHP, Lansing CC, MI
Athletic, projectable righty. Clean arm action. Comes out easy with above average arm speed. More velo to come. Present FB 86-89 mph. Near average slurve 75-76 mph.

 

Jacob Greer, 6’2/180, FR, RHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Athletic righty. High ¾ slot. FB 86-89 mph. Average CB 74 mph. CH 82.

Nate Holliday, 6’1/205, SO, RHP, Des Moines Area CC, IA
Strong bodied righty throws from high ¾ slot. FB 88-89 mph. Average 76 mph SL.

Morgan Holmes, 5’11/190, SO, C, Des Moines Area CC, IA
Strong bodied catcher with quick release, average arm strength with good carry. Held his own in the batter’s box.

Jack Johnson, 6’1/215, SO, 1B, Des Moines Area CC, IA
Strong, mature bodied left-handed hitting 1B with easy pull juice. Tripled off the wall against an elevated slider and took a real good at-bat against a tough lefty, working a walk.

Austin Krob, 6’2/190, FR, LHP, Kirkwood CC, IA
Projectable, athletic lefty with a loose arm. Comes out clean. Present FB 86-89 mph, good arm speed. More velo to come. Occasional tail. Solid spin on breaking ball. Slurve shape. 75-76 mph. Repeated and threw for strikes. High ceiling prospect.

 

Dalton Laney, 6’5/240, SO, RHP, Lincoln Trail CC, IL
Different look righty with low ¾ slot. 87-90 FB. 79-83 SL.

 

Cameron Leff, 6’0/200, SO, RHP, Kirkwood CC, IA
Mature bodied righty with a high effort delivery. FB 90-91 mph, will overthrow at times. Above average CH 80-81 mph. Mixed in occasional 81-82 mph slider. Currently uncommitted.

 

Connor McCarron, 5’7/165, SO, SS, Lansing CC, MI
Left-handed hitting middle infielder. Athletic and high energy. Good actions. Above average range to his right. Near average arm across the diamond.

Chaney Morgan, 6’1/180, SO, RHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Over-the-top slot produced good down angle and 87-88 mph FB. Some bore. Mixed in an occasional slow 70-71 mph CB.

Donnie Nicodemus, 6’1/235, SO, RHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Strong bodied righty. Aggressive, strike thrower. Firm 90-91 mph FB. Above average, late breaking 75 mph CB induced several swing/misses. Mixed occasional 82-83 mph CH. Made it look easy over 1.1 IP, four up, four down.

Logan Sabo, 6’0/200, SO, LHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Lefty with good rhythm in his delivery and feel for three pitches; 85-86 mph FB. 76 mph CB. 81 mph SL. Transfer from Montevallo.

Jackson Uner, 6’0/180, FR, RHP, Des Moines Area CC, IA
Strike throwing freshman righty. Filled up zone with 83-85 mph FB and 73 mph CB with solid depth. Repeated pitch.

Jake Webb, 6’4/270, SO, RHP, Sinclair CC, OH
Extra large framed and big bodied righty, has the look of an NFL Tight End. Compact arm action to a high ¾ slot. Lacks deception. 88-90 mph FB. Small wrinkler SL at 74-96 mph. Also showed 82 mph CH.

Logan Ymker, 6’7/200, FR, RHP, Des Moines Area CC, IA
Tall, long, lean bodied righty with full arm circle. Average arm speed. Arm works well. Present FB 83-85 mph. Useable 72 mph CB. Struggled with command on this look. Needs time and added strength for more body control, but best days look to be ahead of him.
