2023 MHSAA Tournament: Division 2 State Semifinal - Grand Rapids Christian vs Flint Powers Catholic
EAST LANSING - Grand Rapids Christian is back in the Division II state championship game again after blanking Flint Powers Catholic 4-0 in Friday morning’s semifinals.
Kyle Remington threw a seven-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking one for last year’s D-II state runners-up, which lost to Forest Hills Eastern 3-0 in the 2022 title game.
The Eagles scored all the runs Remington would need in the top of the second inning. Josh Winkle opened the frame with a single and moved up on a wild pitch and balk before scoring on a one-out squeeze bunt by Cam Seth. Singles by Parker Seth and Isaac Hubka along with a Powers Catholic error put Grand Rapids Christian in front 3-0.
A Cam Seth double and Parker Seth RBI single in the fourth upped the Grand Rapids Christian lead to 4-0.
Grant Garman went the distance in a losing cause, fanning 11 and not walking a batter, with the Oakland commit surrendering seven hits.
Isaac Sturgess hit two singles for the Chargers, whose biggest threat came in the third when Connor Kelly had a one-out single, Fisher Hendershot was hit by a pitch and Jack Dawley singled to center. But Kelly was gunned down at home on a great relay throw from first baseman Ty Uchman, who took the cutoff from Winkle and fired to catcher Luke Gelderloos for the putout.
Powers Catholic nearly went in front in the bottom of the first when the sixth-rated D-II team in Michigan loaded the bases on singles by Sturgess and Garman and a two-out walk by Dawley. However, Remington got out of the early jam with a strikeout.
The Minnesota commit retired seven of the last eight batters faced in throwing a complete game. The lone Flint Powers player to reach was Garrett Wright on a single in the seventh before being erased on a 6-4-3 double play from Cam Seth to Parker Seth to Uchman on another outstanding defensive play at first base by the George Mason commit.
The top-rated D-II team in the state will be attempting to win a fourth championship in school history, the others coming in 2013, 2012 and 1985.
