2021 PBR Simul-Draft Selections
July 13, 2021
The picks are in! In real time we selected 20 rounds, one by one once again in 2021. Originally created three years ago, Draft HQ has selected prospects every summer since 2018.

After assigning ourselves the 15th overall bonus pool ($8.46M) in 2018 and 10th overall pool ($10.3M) in 2019 we made our selections with the 20th highest pool ($6.65M) in 2020. This year we had the 5th highest bonus pool ($11.36m) and picked directly behind the Red Sox.
Again, it's important to note that each of our picks are made in real time as the draft is taking place. This is not a mock or a post-draft of best available. It's also important to note the challenge we have selecting players without knowing their signability. We may think they will sign, but without a phone call and an offer (neither of which we do, or can do) we never know for sure who will be selected and signed.
With that stated, here are our picks for the 2021 Simul-Draft.
Our selection in the 1st round with pick No. 4B was RHP Kumar Rocker (Vanderbilt) who fell to No. 10 and the Mets. For us it was a no-brainer since Rocker was No. 1 on our Draft Board.
Then it was onto the 2nd round where our gut feel was telling us to take No. 31 on our Draft Board, LHP Andrew Abbott (Virginia). When it was our turn to pick at 40B, our lefty was there and we snatched him up before the Reds selected him 13 picks later.
All was continuing to go smoothly headed to the 3rd round where we targeted the top bat in the SEC who was ranked No. 35 on our Draft Board. Although penalized by MLB clubs analytics for his age (22), we had no such reservations. Gladly, we selected OF Tanner Allen (Mississippi State) with pick No. 75B. He was then selected by the Marlins in the 4th round.
To the 4th round we went looking for another gut feel guy, this one another hitter from the SEC who we had ranked No. 66 on the Draft Board. With pick No. 105B we selected Tennessee 2B Max Ferguson who was eventually selected by the Padres in the 5th round.
After back-to-back picks of SEC hitters, it was time to head back to the ACC for some pitching in the 5th round. Sitting at No. 91 on our Draft Board was a RHP with a fastball up to 99 and a plus slider. This one was easy. Griff McGarry (Virginia) was our pick at No. 136B. He would eventually be selected nine picks later by the Phillies.
We then wrapped up Day Two with the following picks in rounds 6-10:
ROUND | PLAYER | POS | SCHOOL |
6 | Chad Stevens | SS | Portland |
7 | Niko Kavadas | 1B | Notre Dame |
8 | Austin Krob | LHP | TCU |
9 | Jonny Cuevas | RHP | Southern Nevada JC |
10 | Andrew Moore | RHP | Chipola JC |
With plenty of talent remaining on our Draft Board, there was a lot to be excited about entering Day Three (Rounds 11-20). However, this is where signability became an even larger challenge. Several of these players may not sign, and others were not selected by MLB clubs, likely due to a higher bonus demand than where the clubs valued the prospect. Regardless, we picked them how we liked them.
