2020 PBR West Virginia Senior Spotlight: OF Clay Maholic

With high school baseball being shutdown in the Mountain State, we will be highlighting uncommitted seniors for the next few weeks. Today we start our highlighting with a look at 2020 OF Clay Maholic from University HS. 


Scouting Report

2/09/20

 

6-foot, 195-pound left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-hang stride. Stays behind the baseball well and uses his lower half efficiently creating above average barrel whip. Registered a bat exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 7.13 60-yard dash. Played through the baseball routinely in the outfield and showcased straight line carry of 83 mph on throws to home plate. Uncommitted prospect should draw plenty of eyes this spring as he plays his senior year of high school baseball.

 

11/17/19

 

Physical 6-foot, 195-pounder continues to impress with his overall abilities.The left-handed hitter took one of the louder rounds of batting practice on the day starting from a square stance and initiating his swing from a shorter load with a shift and replace stride. Displayed present power with an ability to create backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and ran a 7.32 60-yard dash. Plays through the baseball routinely in the outfield and showcased above average 84 mph arm strength to home plate. One of the top remaining outfielders in the West Virginia class of 2020.

 

2/24/19

 

Offensively, the 6-foot, 195-pound primary Outfielder initiates his swing from a athletic stance, with his hands near his ear. He uses his body and midsection well to create a powerful turn with his hips. His bat stays in the zone and shows the ability to drive the ball to all fields. A 78 mph exit velocity was recorded. A 7.32-laser timed 60 was also recorded.

Defensively, Maholic rounds the ball well. He carries his momentum well into his throws. He sees the ball well and has supreme confidence in his skills.

 

11/18/18

 

6-foot, 195-pound left handed hitter, Maholic initiates his swing from a athletic stance, with his hands near his ear. He uses his body and midsection well to create a powerful turn with his hips. Maholic's bat stays in the zone and shows the ability to drive the ball.

Defensively, Maholic rounds the ball well. He carries his momentum well into his throws. He has the potential to be a next level outfielder.

 

 

7/12/17 5-foot-11, 185-pound left-handed hitter, Maholic initiates swing from open set up with knee to knee leg kick and stride to closed.  Open to closed stride is associated with some top half dive.  

There is also a tendency to land on stiff front leg.  He does demonstrate loose hands and an aggressive lower half turn.  Maholic would benefit from striding to neutral and avoiding upper half dive

Defensively, Maholic does get behind ball consistently and plays through.  He would benefit from being more decisive in reads.
