Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

Preseason All-State has quickly become the top Preseason event in the state of Florida. Last year’s event consisted of over 50 committed players and 2 players who were selected in the 2019 MLB Draft. This event is held for the top 2020s-2023s throughout the state to kick off the Prep Baseball Report's spring high school baseball coverage.

Preseason All-State is coming up this weekend and we will continue to spotlight many of the top players who will be in attendance. Today, we look at 2021 RHP Sebastian Martinez (Plant). Martinez was a member of Team Florida at the 2019 PBR Future Games. He is ranked 101st in our Florida Class of 2021 rankings.

Scouting Report

8/22/19

Physical athletic frame. Quick delivery and arm speed. Sat 83-84 with the fastball and got it up to 85 with a spin rate of 1915 rpm. Used fastball and dark, late-breaking slider combo. The Slider sat 73-74 (2035 spin rate) with a 10-4 shape. Creates good torque on the ball by keeping his front shoulder closed while his hips are fired and facing the catcher. High ¾ arm slot. Hides the ball well and speeds up the hitter with his rapid motion. Commanded both pitches well and attacked the strike zone, inducing a lot of soft ground ball contact.

6/23/19

Athletic and strong frame at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. Throws from the high 3/4 arm slot with short arm action and average arm speed with fastball sitting 82-84, topping at 85 mph and was very heavy through the zone, curveball 66-68 with near fastball arm speed and good depth, changeup 77-78 with sink. Commands all pitches for strikes. Easy effort with rhythm and stays in line with delivery to home. Balanced setup at the plate with a short leg kick and some rhythm in the swing. Above average bat speed with 88 exit velocity, line drive hitter with level bat path with some pull side power.

10/11/18

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds with a projectable frame and strong lower half. On the mound, he worked a clean inning where he featured a fastball that sat 81-83 mph, touching 84 with some run along with a 76-77 mph changeup and 66-70 mph curveball. Threw first pitch strikes and worked the corners, down in the zone. Struck out two. In the field, he fields the ball under control and out in front with solid defensive actions. Suited for a corner spot. Throws across the diamond topped out at 78 mph and were accurate to the bag. At the plate he starts from a wide base with a slightly open stance and uphill path through the zone. At times he can drop his hands through the zone, but when he stays level to uphill on his finish, he was able to drive the ball into the outfield. Registered an 82 mph exit velocity in the cage.

8/25/18

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds with an athletic, projectable frame. On the mound, he showed a quick arm with some extension out in front on his delivery, displaying a fastball that sat 81-83 mph with life, touching 84. Also mixed in a 68-70 mph curveball that showed depth and threw for strikes along with a 74-75 mph changeup. Interesting two-way player that should see some jumps in his game as he fills out his frame and matures. Offensively, he shows some present bat speed through the zone. Registered an 86 mph exit velocity in the cage.
