CSN Scout Day: Position Player Preview

Brett Harrison
West Coast Supervisor

The College of Southern Nevada has established itself as one the premier Junior College programs in the country, not only because of their consistent, deep playoff runs, but their success at getting players moved on to the next level. After a JUCO World Series run in 2024, the Coyotes look to reload for 2025 with a promising roster that has already flashed pitching depth as well as depth at the plate. Each year, CSN partners with Prep Baseball Nevada to carry out the JUCO Scout Day, highlighting the sophomores within the program that project to be impact players in the upcoming Spring.

This event will provide players access to updated information, verified and objective personal stats and video to the 1000+ college coaches that subscribe to Prep Baseball.

Prep Baseball events are designed to give players the maximum exposure needed to advance to the next level. Not only will you receive high-level exposure from college coaches, but all players at events will be videotaped, and the edited performance will be hosted on the website.

CSN Scout Day: Position Player Reports

Catchers

+ Ashton Zacher6’0 , 210 lbs.  Left Handed Hitter.  Ashton is a middle of the order type bat as he hit in the 4 hole for us as a true Freshman.  He split time with a sophomore last year that transferred to University of Utah this summer.  Ashton wound up catching 8 of our last 9 games during our World Series run as our other guy got hurt in the Regional playoffs.  He hit .287 with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HR’s and drove in 21 runs in 27 games started.  He also drew 18 walks against 18 K’s in 94 AB’s.  On the defensive side, Ashton boasted a .982 fld. % committing 4 errors in 221 attempts.  He threw out 7 of 27 runners.  His typical pop time is a 2.0.  Ashton is an exceptional student as he earned a 4.0 his freshman year.

+ Teddy Chartier5’11 , 190 lbs.  Right Handed Hitter.  Teddy is more of a defensive catcher first showcasing advanced receiving skills, a very accurate arm and very good blocking skills.  Teddy’s typical pop time is 1.95-2.0.  On the offensive side, Teddy is more of a bottom of the order type bat that has seen constant improvement since he got here in the fall of 2023.  His freshman year, Teddy hit .250 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, drove in 11 runs in limited innings.  On the defensive side, Teddy had a 1.000 fld. % in 131 attempts.  Teddy had limited attempts in the running game as he only threw out 1 runner.  This fall, Teddy has already thrown out 5 would be base stealers.  He started for us in game 2 of the NJCAA World Series.

+ Joey Randazzo6’ , 185 lbs. Left Handed Hitter.  Joey is coming off of a medical redshirt last year here at CSN as he transferred to us in the summer of 2023 from Cal Baptist where he redshirted as a true freshman.  Joey has pull side pop, a very good catchers mentality, good blocking skills and an average pop time of 2.0-2.05.

Infielders

+ Jack Wheatley6’3 , 190 lbs. Right Handed Hitter.  Jack is our returning starting shortstop from a club that went 53-12 last year.  Jack has put on some good weight this past summer.  He is a very rangy shortstop getting to many balls in the 6 hole and up the middle.  Has a good knack for the game.  Good arm strength when he stays in his legs.  He had some struggles last year on the throwing side that attributed to many of his errors.  He has worked very hard to fix those issues.  Jack is a very headsy baserunner that does a great job when on base.  He hit .315 , 5 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers and drove in 41 runs.  He is a redshirt sophomore as he transferred after his freshman season to us from Liberty University.

+ Tyler Garritano6’1 , 200 lbs.  Right Handed Hitter.  Tyler is a transfer from Texas State University.  Physical corner infielder that will play 3B for us.  He is a middle of the order type bat that shows advanced barrel control.  He consistently finds barrels in BP and our fall games thus far.  I see him as a high slugging percentage guy for us this year.  He is working to create a little more lift with his swing this fall.  His defense has improved immensely since showing up about a month ago. He has shown very good decision making skills on when to go and when to not go at 3B.  This summer he played for the Abilene Flying Bison and hit .296 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 27 RBI’s and 21 walks.  His OBP was .406.

+ Roy Durham6’2 , 220 lbs. Left Handed Hitter.  Will be our 1B this spring.  Roy transferred to us from Point Loma University this summer.  Roy should be a 4-6 type guy in our order this year.  He possesses good pull side pop, good knowledge of strike zone and good bat to ball skills.  This past summer for the Leberal Bee Jays he hit .459 with 50 hits, 31 RBI’s 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homers and only 4 K’s.  He has shown good feel at first base and does a nice job on the pick side of things.

Outfielders

+ Kaiden Smaka6’ , 185 lbs. Left Handed Hitter.  We are hoping Kaiden will be our lead off hitter.  He was a platooning RF for most of the season last season before winning the job outright and playing a bunch down the stretch for our club.  Kaiden possesses plus plus speed and tracks the ball off the bat extremely well in CF.  He can play any 3 OF spots as the arm plays in RF as well.  Kaiden brings a speed dynamic to any club he will play for as he ran a 6.60 as a senior in HS.  Kaiden’s freshman numbers were .414, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run to go with 19 RBI’s and was 19-19 in SB’s.

+ Matt Ramirez6’2, 175 lbs.  Right Handed Hitter.  Matty is a redshirt sophomore that has improved his game tremendously since coming here in the fall of 2022.  He is a lock down defender in the OF and can play any 3 spots.  He is competing for time in one of our two corner OF spots and will be our back up CF.  Matt is a contact type hitter that fights to win bags.  He does a nice job on the bases and is always on top of down angles.  He had limited time last year.  In his limited time he had 2 doubles and 1 triple.  He was our pinch runner off the bench last year in the deep post season run we had.

+ Matthew Ziroli6’ , 195 lbs.  Right Handed Hitter.  Matthew transferred to us from Marshall University this summer.  He is a redshirt sophomore.  Matthew has shown many swings this fall with high velocity off the bat.  He is a corner OF type guy more precisely a LF in my opinion.  He has shown the ability to drive the baseball to all parts of the field thus far.  Intriguing guy to keep an eye on as the fall progresses.
