Top Tier Athletics Scout Day : Quick Hits

On Sunday, September 22nd, the Prep Baseball Indiana staff traveled to Evansville, Indiana to host the annual Top Tier Athletics Scout Day. Twenty five prospects from the organization showcased their abilities in a pro-style workout, with a strong crop of exciting young talent putting their talents' on display. Read along to find the players that stood out most, along with a full statistical analysis at this link. 

+ '28 SS Dylan Murphy (North Posey) is a high-end '28 prospect with some tools and abilities that are well-advanced for the age and should make him a nationally recognized prospect as this class ages. A dual sport standout with an athletic, 6-foot-3, 190 pound lean, muscular frame - the body immediately passes the eye test and there is plenty of upside in all parts of his game with the projectable frame, plus the fact that he is still 14 years old and even a bit young for the grade by today's standards. Murphy burned a 6.91 60-yard dash to begin the day, a low-effort glider that should mature into a plus runner. His best work is done in the right-handed batter's box, where he took a loud round of batting practice with an exit velocity that peaked at 93.9 mph. Beginning with high hands in an athletic stance, I love the pre-pitch hand rhythm shown and it flows into a strong position at launch, while it is well-timed with a controlled, leg lift stride. Murphy works behind the ball with a more direct path and shows the ability to backspin the baseball from gap-to-gap, on top of leveraging out front to hint at future juice. The athletic shortstop shows soft hands and quality feet on the dirt, with fringy arm strength that works out of a quick transfer from a 3/4 slot. 

+ '28 C/RHP Spencer Schiff (Evansville Mater Dei) was another exciting '28 prospect in attendance. Offering a high-waisted look with some strength present already in the 6-foot-1, 170 pound frame, Schiff showed well in all facets with a very advanced set of skills. An above average runner already (7.13), Schiff showed off a repeatable stroke during batting practice, hitting out of a wide setup with small moves and creating bat speed in a short window. The bat works flatter through the zone, with his best balls elevated to the pull-side gap with strength, reaching a peak exit velocity of 90.8 mph. Schiff showed strong catch-and-throw abilities during the workout, accurately placing the ball on the second base bag with pops as low as 1.97. The projectable youngster is also an intriguing watch on the mound, up to 83 mph last spring with feel for a breaking ball. 

+ '27 RHP Andrew Broshears (Evansville Memorial) threw my favorite 'pen of the day. Athletic at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds - Broshears peppered the strike zone one pitch after another with a low ease of operation and an arm that works clean on the backside. The fastball works in the low-80's (T 83) presently, but plays with high spin and nearly 18" of IVB, on average. The heater will certaintly louden w/ strength gains and is complemented by an innate feel for spin. Showing two distinct breaking balls, Broshears flipped over both a mid-70's slider and low-70's curveball, both with unique shape, and both spinning north of 2200 on a regular basis. Broshears showed a mid-70's change as a usable fourth to round out a future-starters' mix. While I see more of him as an arm, his 7.06 60 and athletic moves at short and in the box only reaffirms his athleticism. 

+ '27 OF Micah Toler (Heritage Hills) is a projectable, athletic outfielder that showed well throughout the day. Holding a high-waisted, 6-foot-1, 165 pound frame, Toler burned an event-best 6.89 60-yard dash before putting together several backspun liners in his batting practice round. Toler showed a controlled, athletic move to the baseball with a tight, connected bat path, with his best ball jumping off the bat at 89 mph. It is an easy operation in the batter's box and he will grow into power as he adds strength to his long-levered frame. In the outfield, Toler moves around with an athletic gait and showed soft hands with fringy arm strength. After seeing varsity time as a freshman last year, Toler is a breakout candidate in southern Indiana with several traits to dream on. 

+ I really liked '28 C Alex Hood (Owensboro Catholic, KY) out of Kentucky. A physical, 5-foot-10 backstop with strength present already, Hood showed bat speed over the course of his batting practice round with his best ball coming off at 89.9 mph. I love the gather in the swing - a slow, controlled toe tap that allows for a repeatable timing mechanism while also loading the backside. The barrel works in an upward fashion and should end up super impactful as he matures. Defensively, Hood showed an accurate arm with strength with his best pops registering as low as 1.98. 

+ '27 LHP Cayden McGrew (Evansville Reitz) is an up-and-coming southpaw from Evansville with several traits to dream on. Walking around with a wiry, high-waisted, 6-foot, 155 pound frame - McGrew showcased arm strength with an event-best 87 mph arm from the outfield before filling the zone at an above average clip in his 'pen. An athletic mover, McGrew ran his fastball up to 81 mph, while showing feel for a mid-60's slider and upper-60's change. McGrew repeats full circle arm action, a trait that should allow his overall velocities to louden as he adds strength to the immature frame.
