Logged just three starts this summer and showed better stuff than his aggregate line would otherwise indicate (thanks to a very rough first outing against Falmouth). Over his final two starts, the first of which we caught, Schultz allowed just one run in ten innings of work while walking one and striking out nine. The big-bodied righty shows below-average velocity (88-90 mph) that plays way up working backwards off his quality 79-to-81 mph slider. He’s aggressive with the breaker and can show a shorter, cut version at 84-85 mph along with a low-80s changeup to further keep hitters off balance. He’s old for his class, turning 23 right after next-years expected draft date, and likely tops out as a reliever at the next level, but the slider is interesting enough to keep him on pro radars.

Closing out the game for the Yankees was Schultz, who allowed two hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out three in three innings. He has a tall, long frame and pitches from a high slot with looseness and moderate effort. He gets arm-side sink to his fastball, which was 88-91, and downhill plane. His curveball is soft with big break at 68-71.
8/10/17 Vanderbilt commit, set the tone for the Yankees Scout Team as he commanded his fastball to both sides of the plate at 86-88. Featuring a quick, loose arm, Schultz has little effort in his delivery and is able to consistently repeat his release point, and pound strikes with his fastball. He countered the fastball with a solid changeup at 77 mph along with a developing, 10/4 breaking ball that had slower, gradual break at 70 mph. However, the 6-foot-5, 196-pounder didn’t need much more than his fastball as he creates a downward plane with late movement to the arm side, and it appears to jump on hitters.
