Mullahey, a 2018 right-handed hitting catcher, stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 180 pounds, ran a 4.40 from home to first. Offensively- Starts from a square balanced lower half, slight bend in both knees with the weight even, hands are above the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat pointed down to the ground. Uses a subtle front foot lift, toe-to-heel action when landing, with the hands loaded straight back and barrel of the bat getting slightly greater than 45 degrees during the launch phase of the swing. During batting practice showed the ability to drive the ball well to the pull side gap, however allows the front hip to dominate at times causing a pulling off the ball from contact thru extension. With an ability to be more consistent with keeping the lead hip in longer, will improve the exit velocity of 79 MPH on the day as well as drive the ball with more authority from the opposite field to pull side gap. Defensively- Square primary stance, a bit hard on the toes, with the glove out in front of the body. Throws showed good arm strength, transferring the ball quickly. Throws were a bit inconsistent, but signs of a plus arm were there, as the front side was not strong throughout the throw causing the throwing arm to cast away from the body slightly. With an ability stay thru the throw longer the pop time of 1.95 could improve as well as the 73 MPH arm velocity both of which are impressive for this 2018 grad. Pitching- Starts from the third base side of the rubber with both hands held in front of the chest. Gets to the gathered position with a heavy step towards the first base line with the pivot foot remaining on the third base side of the rubber while the lead knee elevates just below the chest and slight inward rotation of the lead hip. Sticks the landing with the lead toe pointed directly at the catcher and an arch to the back and lead arm extended straight out in front of the body. The fastball, thrown from an over the top angle, topped out at 79 MPH, sitting mainly between 77-78. Fastball showed arm side run with life, but could show some more command with an ability to keep the front side more direct limiting the horizontal movement on release from the power position. The curveball, topping out at 70 MPH, showed tight rotation and sharp 11-to-5 shape. Also featured a changeup, sitting at 74-75 MPH, with heavy arm side run and explosiveness. The differential, from the fastball ( -4 MPH), could improve on the changeup as well.
