Right-handed hitting outfielder who is improving vastly since last year. The body frame is stronger and you can see the results on the diamond. Ran a 4.31 down the line on his dig to first base. The outfield play is solid and he gets off the ball well, very reliable out there. Threw 76 mph from the outfield. The bat is developing nicely, tee exit velocity of 83 mph. Hits out of a even footed start, picks up and puts down the front foot as the ball approaches. The barrel path is long and flat the ball, he shows good coverage of the plate with his swing. The bottom half is under control and continuance of physical development is the key.
8/5/15
Switch-hitting outfielder who kicks in to play second base as well. The arm strength was 76 from the outfield and 73 from the infield. He moves well in the outfield and in the infield. The arm path and slot is long which will deter him from handling the pivot at second. The feet work and the body has room for growth. Ran a 4.49 down the line. As a hitter, the right-handed swing is more advanced at this point. The path is flat and to the ball as he did a nice job of staying inside the ball from the right side. The left-handed swing is a work in progress as he guides the bat and feels for the swing. This is common in guys learning to switch hit. He hits out of an even base and the path is loose and correct but he collapses on the bottom half as he swings. A strong front leg and more bottom half stability will make the difference.
Michael Whalen, OF, The Albany Academies HS, NY (2016)
Whalen stands 6-foot-0, 160-pounds with a frame to build on. From the OF he charges the ball hard, fields glove side in front of his body, long arm action with a long stride, throws from a high-3/4 slot, arm strength at 75 mph. At the plate he uses a relaxed approach. On the pitch he uses a knee lift and stride, back load. Short path to the ball, slightly uphill bat path, some extension out in front. Exit velocity was 70 mph, home to first time was 4.5, pro agility time was 4.40.
