Decker, a 2018 right-handed hitting middle infielder currently ranked as the 15th best in the state for the class of 2018, stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 163 pounds, ran a personal best 7.37 60. Offensively- Starts with a balanced square lower half with the hands held in front of and slightly above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat almost perpendicular to the ground. Gets to the launch phase of the swing using a simple lift of the lead foot with no stride forward just puts it back down in the original starting point while the hands use a buggy whip motion with minimal movement back. During batting practice, the bat path was tight to the ball with hands staying well connected to the lower half. Showed the ability to drive the ball well from the pull side gap to the opposite field gap. Recorded a personal best exit velocity of 83 MPH (+2 MPH from last event). Defensively- Athletic pre-pitch setup with the glove in front of the body and feet closer together. Uses a two step prep-step to get the body moving during the pitch. Approaches the ball with fluid athletic movements, fielding the ball out in front of the body with the feet slightly more than shoulder width apart off the left side of the body. Transfer is made from slightly above the waist with both thumbs down to the ground which helps create shorter arm action. Recorded an arm velocity of 80 MPH which was a personal best (+3 MPH) from last event.
Decker stands a wiry 6-foot-2, 150-pounds and showed good upside as a 2018 middle guy. Offensively- Sets up wide and athletic and uses a quick up down stride and limited load up top. Bat path was slightly inclined, and used an aggressive approach to the center of the field. Exit velocity was 81-mph. Defensively- Showed active footwork constantly moving through the ball nicely. Arm slot was over the top and clocked at 77-mph across. Ran a 7.5 60-yard dash and a 4.31 down the line. With + athletic ability, an aggressive stroke and a frame that's got a lot of room to pack on some muscle, Decker is one worth watching in the coming years.
Last Chance Preview Showcase (November 29, 2015)
Johnny is a long and lean 6-foot-2, 155 pounds with room for physical gains. He ran a 4.74 Home to 1B and had a 78 MPH exit velocity. Offensively- Johnny starts from a slightly spread stance with hands close to the shoulder and a 30 lifted to 45 degree bat angle. Uses a short load and leg kick for timing, staying behind the ball. Back foot and hip rotation is aggressive and leads the swing most of the time. Some uphill lift early in swing but stays in the hitting zone post contact. Repeats efforts and showed good balance. Defensively- Attacks ball by moving laterally and sitting back a touch. Proper angles into fielding position. Hands can get underneath at times. Funnels everything into the belt, using a short arm action from a high 3/4 slot. Peak velocity was 73 MPH across the infield. Size and defensive actions may project him at a corner infield spot over the long term.
