Purcell, a 2018 right-handed hitting catcher current ranked as the 16th best catching prospect for the class of 2018, stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 200 pounds, ran a 7.16 60, which was 0.17 quicker from the previous event. Offensively- Works from a square well balanced lower half, slight bend with both knees, hands held in front and slightly above the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat wrapped slightly towards the pitcher while rested on the back shoulder. Uses a lifting of the lead foot, with minimal shift of weight to the back side, with little to no stride action forward while the hands are loaded straight back staying inside the back shoulder with a buggy whip like action. Showed plus pop from the pull side line to the middle of the field, getting quality extension on all pitches as well. Recorded an impressive exit velocity of 92 MPH, a huge increase from the 84 MPH shown at the previous event. Defensively- Setup is from a triangular well balanced lower half. Received the ball with a quiet hand, working from under the ball in the lower third of the zone as well as outside the ball to the corners with minimal body movement presenting the ball well. Throws to second, transfer was quick from the center of the body chest height getting the body into a strong power position. Throws showed quality accuracy but could get more carry and velocity with a more aggressive drive from the back leg as well as staying tighter with the lead arm from power position to the release. Recorded an arm velocity of 73 MPH to go along with a best pop time of 2.08, but has been as quick as 2.03 at previous events. Projectable athletic receiver at the next level.
