Long Island Top Prospect (January 16, 2017)

DeNobrega, a 2018 right-handed hitting infielder/RHP,  stands at 5-foot-10 and  weighs 165 pounds, ran a 4.75 from home to first.  Offensively- Begins with the lower half slightly open, with a slight shift of weight to the back leg with the hands above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat nearly parallel to the ground. Gets to the launch phase of the swing with a lift of the front foot with movement forward while the hands get minimal movement to the back shoulder, slightly dipping below the shoulder on approach to the ball. During batting practice showed the ability to hit the ball where it was pitched using all fields. Swing showed a simple compact approach, but could get more drive from the lower half which should help increase the bat speed. Recorded an exit velocity of 72 MPH, but has been recorded as high as 74 MPH at a previous event. Defensively-  Corner infielder that uses little to no pre-pitch movement. Approaches the ball with some conservativeness but fields the ball with smooth athletic movements keeping the hands in front of the body and using the legs to lower the body down with a good chest angle. Transfers the ball quickly from the center of the body, chest height, getting the body into a strong power position. Throws recorded an arm velocity of 64 MPH, but has shown 70 MPH as a previous high. Pitching- Starts from the third base side, wide base, with the hands held chin height in front of the body. Subtle step to the first base line while the pivot drags to the center of the rubber with the hands remaining chin height and lead knee getting above the waist with a slight coil from the upper half during the gathered phase of the delivery. Separates cleanly with the lead arm angling upward sticking the landing with the lead toe pointed towards the catcher and keeping a tight front side. Loses some leverage and linear movement from the power position as the back leg elevates from the rubber with little to no extension. The fastball, thrown from a mid ¾ arm slot, sat between 73-75 while topping out at 76 MPH. The fastball showed plus arm side run as well sink with command in the lower third of the zone to both sides of the plate. The changeup, thrown from the same arm slot, showed quality arm side fade and good differential at 69 MPH.

Long Island Prospect Preview (August 8, 2016)

DeNobrega, stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs a solid 165-pounds. He ran a
7.63 60 and plays 3B/RHP. Offensively- Base is just farther than shoulder width with knees bent slightly inward. Bat wiggle pre-pitch with hands at ear level. Small leg kick and good stride. Little hand separation, but hands attack the ball swiftly. Drove the ball well to the middle of the field. DeNobrega’s hands will begin his swing with his hip rotation slightly delayed. With a more consistent launch keeping his rotation ahead of his hand movements, should be able to improve on his exit velocity of 74 MPH. Shows power potential. Was able to drive the ball to the gaps during batting batting practice. Improvements to hip torque can increase bat speed even more. Defensively-  Starts with feet a little more than shoulder width apart. Approaches the ball aggressively, fielding the ball of the left side of his body. Will transfer the ball low and a times to the right hip, which delays arm speed. Transfer of the ball more towards the center of the body and funneling the ball higher will help improve the throwing velocity of 70 MPH. Pitching- Positioned in the center of the rubber with his feet wider than shoulder width. Takes a side step towards first base, before getting into a gathered position. Hand separation is chest level, with the throwing arm extending out towards center field, glove side action is shorter and tighter. Hides the ball during the entire delivery. Throws from an over the top arm angle topping out at 78 MPH on the fastball. With little more extension from the right side, should be able to get the velocity over 80. Showed the ability to repeat the delivery on all off-speed pitches. Had an acceptable speed differential on the change-up  (70 MPH) with downward movement and tight spin.
