Running a 6.85 is not overwhelming but he has above average in-game speed. In the infield, Shaw had been and projects to be a second baseman but has been forced to play shortstop for Don Bosco Prep. During his time at SS, he has been able to showcase above average range and more arm strength then originally perceived. Shaw has tremendous footwork and moves extremely well laterally. He uses his feet to get to the baseball and then to work through his throw. With a quick transfer and release, Shaw has the ability to turn a quick double play from either side of second base.
As a hitter, Shaw is athletic enough to swing from either side of the plate and has showcased that ability. However, he chooses to hit exclusively from the right side in the game. He hits from a square, balanced stance with an athletic base and traditional hand set. As he loads, his hands move quietly into a cocked position and he will stride onto his toe as a timing mechanism. As the pitch begins its flight, Shaw stays balanced and inside his feet as his stride foot lands. His head stays quiet and his eyes stay level as he uses quick hands and above average bat speed to attack the baseball with a smooth, level line drive swing.
Shaw has tremendous hand-eye coordination and an advanced approach. He has the ability to keep his hands back on breaking ball or fastball away and drive it to RF. He can also jump on a fastball middle-in or breaking ball and drive it up the middle or pull side with back spin and pop.
Nothing phases him and he hits whether it is 94 or 84. He should and most likely will hit at any and all levels. Much of his work is done before he steps in the box because he approaches the game with a next-level confidence and competitive fire that most players would love to possess.
