Power left-handed pitcher who showed very well for himself in Hudson. Pitches out of a slightly higher than ¾ slot. The ball jumps out of his hand and the delivery is repeated. I do think he has too much forward lean with his chest as he releases the ball. He needs to stay a tad taller and let his hand get out front further. The fastball has plus sink and life, touched 88 mph. The breaking ball is big but he struggles to command it at 67 mph. The slider was 70 mph, and I think that is his best chance at a plus out-pitch. The changeup is a bit hard but the action is improving, touched 78 mph.
A promising looking left-handed arm who has a clean arm swing with a slightly higher than 3/4 arm slot. He fastball is straight now but once his slot falls a tick we should see some arm side action. The breaking ball is in the 70 range and has good spin to it, it's 11/7. I didn't see much of a changeup. He has a thick bottom half and his movements are loose and athletic.
8/20/19: Works well downhill out of a high-three-quarters slot, though his 90-92 mph fastball comes with lots of effort and a notable head whack. He produces good spin on his low-70s curve and there’s room to tighten the offering based on arm speed and wrist action. His changeup was inconsistent but, at its best, flashed average with some arm-side action, and he snapped off a couple surprising low-80s sliders to steal strikes early the count. There’s intriguing stuff here, but Wetherbee will need to improve on the 5.06 BB/9 rates he showed this summer to establish himself as a potential early-to-mid Day Two talent.
