High slot left-handed pitcher with a lanky frame and build. Ball comes straight over the top and has some downhill plane to it. The day I saw him he was up to 79 but have heard he has touched a bit better than that. Changeup will be his second best pitch and could have a chance to be an out pitch with deception from that slot. Breaking ball is a tough pitch to spin but the shape and form of his spin pitch were ok. Good follow, as he is big and left-handed
* Made a significant jump in velocity at a PG event, now up to 89/90
2020 DRAFT: After an All-Star summer in the Cape, Shuster picked up this spring where he left off in Orleans. In four starts and 26.1 IP he struck out 43 and walked just four. Armed with a fastball up to 94 mph, the 6-foot-3, 210 pound lefty also shows a plus changeup and significant signs that he has learned to spin the ball as well. With a short and sharp break at 80-82 mph and a 2100-2300 spin rate Shuster is able to miss bats and generate some swing/miss with the pitch. It doesn't have much depth which is due to the push and collapse in the lower half of his delivery. His fastball hums along mostly at 92-94 mph and spins in the 2250-2350 rpm range. It has very good fade, up to 15" at times, as well as 18" of vertical break. Typically his bread-n-butter, Shuster's low-spin changeup is a plus pitch in the 79-82 mph range. Thrown with fastball arm speed and producing good depth (12-13") at 1450-1800 rpm it also induces swing/miss and he often doubles up with the pitch. Shuster works quick and challenges hitters. With a compact/short and controlled arm circle, he does not have an ideal arm action, but it's not a major concern; he gets to where he needs to be and he hides the ball in back really well. Projected as more a mid-Day Two talent heading into the spring, Shuster likely caught enough helium to float into the top three rounds this summer.
8/22/19: Was a force for the Firebirds, going 4-0 in his seven starts (1.41 ERA/ 0.78 WHIP), striking out 35 in 32 innings while walking just five and holding opposing hitters to a .179 average in route to earning a Cape All-Star Game appearance. Shuster didn’t blow batters away with his 90-92 mph FB, but both his curveball and changeup have above-average potential. The breaker works 77-78 mph with more vertical drop and 80-81 mph when he manipulates the spin more horizontally, with sweeping action. At present, Shuster projects as a potential early-Day Two target. (Faleris)
