8/8/15 - 6-foot-3, 190-pound RHP is one of the top uncommitted 2016 arms in KY. Works through a high-3/4 slot with shorter arm action, arm is quick, has some effort in delivery, fastball sat 86-87 mph with good arm-side run and sink, 71-72 mph curveball is sharp with 11/5 action and thrown for strikes, also showed a harder 77 mph slider with late bite, pitched two perfect innings while striking out three batters (all on FB’s). Purnell’s 86-87 fastball through his two innings of work represented the most consistent velocity seen to date.
6/17/15 - 6-foot-3, 190-pound RHP with good pitcher’s frame, uses shorter arm action through a high-3/4 to over the top arm slot, quick arm, has some effort in delivery, fastball sat 83-85 mph topping at 86, curveball varied between 66-71 mph with sharp 11/5 action and good depth, good feel for curveball throwing it consistently for strikes, pounds the strike zone, allowed one hit, no walks, and stuck out one (swinging on FB) in his inning of work, have seen slightly more velocity from Purnell at past events. As a position player - right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, short swing path produced an exit velocity of 88 mph, uses all fields well in BP, line drive type hitter, ran 4.82 down the line, went 0-for-3 in game play. Showed well defensively, soft hands, works through the baseball well with athletic actions, high-3/4 release with 80 mph velocity across the infield, accurate throws, good body control with the ability to throw on the move from multiple arm slots.
2/14/15 - 6-foot-3, 175-pound RHP with frame that projects well at the next level, uses short arm action and works through a high-3/4 to over the top arm slot, has some effort in delivery, arm is quick, good downward tilt on 84-86 mph fastball that touched 87 on one occasion, throws a 71-73 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action and shows good feel for it, throws changeup with good arm action at 76-77 mph, also flashes a 76-77 mph slider with some bite, good upside on the 2016 prospect. As a position player, with lanky frame, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, level swing path with flat finish, line drive type hitter, showed ability to use all fields, generates some bat speed, 88 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.49 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows good footwork, plays through the ball well, hands work, showed a quicker exchange than he did at previous event, short high-3/4 release, 82 mph arm across the infield (84 at previous event), solid footwork allows him to play faster defensively than straight line speed indicates.
10/19/14 - 6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect, lanky frame that projects well, has an up tempo delivery with good lower half direction, arm is quick and works through a high-3/4 arm slot, fastball sat 83-85 mph with occasional arm-side run, shows good feel for 67-71 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, good arm action on 74 mph changeup that shows significant arm-side run and sink, allowed one hit and struck out four in his two innings of work, projects for additional velocity, high-level class of 2016 prospect. As a position player, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, flat bat path with a pull approach, 80 mph exit velocity off the tee, hit well in game play going 3-for-4 with two singles to left and a double down the left field line. Defensively, showed the best infield arm of the event at 84 mph across the infield with long high-3/4 release, hands play well, long exchange, accurate throws, good arm from the hole.
