An Anderson recruit, Southern has been off to a hot start this spring. Heading into the game Southern had an ERA of 0.00. Though he didn’t have his best outing of the year on April 27th in a loss against 3A No. 8 Carroll-Flora , Southern did strike out 12 opposing batters. His fastball was a consistent 84-85 with a mid-60’s breaking ball. Shows rhythm and repeats well in the delivery. Shorter arm action, high ¾ arm slot.
12.8.18: 5-foot-11, 135 pound RHP pitches from a short, high 3/4 arm action with some arm speed. Controlled balance point. Shows some effort in the delivery. Shoulders work closed. Falls off towards 1B side, lands square. Fastball was thrown for a strike at 75-77. Breaking ball was his best pitch showing power action from a 1/5 shape and thrown for a strike. CH flashes fade action and thrown for a strike at 69-70. Offensively, hits from a narrow stance, hands load back with a bat wrap. Over rotation in the lower half, average balance. Average bat speed, short/level path. High exit velocity of 80 mph.
12/16/17: 5-foot-5, 130 pound right-handed pitcher has good rhythm and direction down the mound. Controls lower half well for age. Fastball sat 66-68mph for strikes. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with some feel. Change-up is thrown with near fastball arm speed. Short arm swing, high 3/4 release. Underdeveloped frame that should add velocity and physicality. Right-handed hitter has a tall, open setup. Leg kick used as a timing trigger. Hand load is smooth, back. Average barrel turn. Uses all fields. High exit velocity of 66mph. Defensively, hands are above average with clean transfer. Plays with flat feet. Throws topped 61 across infield.
