2017 Spring Scout Blog: The 6-foot-5, 185 pound left-hander had arguably his best outing of the season in a no decision on Monday night against rival Snider HS at Fort Wayne’s Parkview Field. The Cincinnati signee and new No. 1 ranked prospect in Indiana’s 2017 class threw eight innings of no-hit baseball before giving up three hits in the top half of the ninth. He finished going 8 1/3 allowing three hits, four runs, four walks while striking out nine. Schoenle held 88-89, touching 90-91 multiple times throughout his first four innings of work, striking out six with four groundouts and two pop outs. He got into some trouble in the fifth when he walked back to back hitters. He appeared not as comfortable working from the stretch and saw the fastball velocity dip to 84-86. In prior outings we’ve seen the fastball velocity decrease once he got into the later innings, but after working his way out of the fifth inning, he was still sitting 87-89 in the sixth and seventh. He showed better control of his 74-79 mph breaking ball, showing hard, sharp break in to right-handed hitters, getting many called strikes and weak contact. The southpaw has quickly established himself as a legitimate draft prospect, and should continue to gain attention from scouts throughout the rest of the season.
3/29/17 Game Notes: Athletic, slender frame at 6-foot-5, 185 pounds. Short arm swing, high 3/4 slot, fast arm speed. Works a little cross-fire, finishes tall. In his first outing of the spring, sat 90-91, T-92 in the first inning, 87-89 in the 2nd, settling in at 84-87 with a couple of 88's in innings 3-5. Breaking ball shows sharpness at 73-76. Able to command the breaking ball early for a strike, got a little erratic later in the game. Finished his night with 5IP, 0ER, 1H, 10Ks. Cincinnati signee.
6/6/16 Game Notes: Uncommitted 2017 southpaw stands in at 6-foot-5, 185 pounds. Athletic frame and actions. Pitches from a short, high 3/4 arm action with quick arm speed. Short stride to the plate, finishes upright. Fastball sat 88-89 in the first inning against Carmel, settling in at 84-87 late in the game. Flashed several sharp breaking balls at 74-77 with depth. High follow in the 2017 class.
