3/13/16- 6-foot-3, 187-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.66 runner. Good balance and body control with ¼ back turn delivery. Clean pie arm action with heavy fastball. Has made strides in secondary offerings with advancement of slider and curveball. Also throwing a changeup to go with splitter. Repeats relatively well out of same slot with all pitches. Deeper load with good pop in bat. Uses lower half in swing. Stays down and through with lift in swing plane. Front hip opens early occasionally losing outer half of plate. 86 mph exit velocity. Glove is sure. Tends to field on heels and deep. Good footwork around bag. Well above avg. arm strength for position at 86 mph.
8/4/15- 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. High leg kick with solid body control in delivery. Lands slightly across body to plate. Pie arm action. 4-seam is firm and straight; 2-seam flashes above avg. ASR. Fastball was 86-87; touching 88 mph. Slurvy breaking ball with loose spin and 10/4 shape for strikes. Split is best secondary offering. Shows late sink and run and is thrown near fastball arm speed. 7.53 runner. Athletic set-up in box. Balance in swing. Pull approach. Barrel leaves zone early. Strength in swing and pop to pull side of field. 89 mph exit velocity. Fields deep in stance. Funnels baseball to body occasionally. Shows solid hands and feet. Above avg. arm strength at 86 mph across infield. Wood has positioned himself as one of the best 2017 arms in the state and has been receiving significant recruiting interest.
Preseason All-State 3/15/15
6-foot-3, 195-pound 2-way player. Solid build. Ran a 7.97 60. Throws heavy fastball with downhill plane from ¾ slot with pie arm action. Keeps fastball in bottom of zone at 84-86 mph. Curveball lacks rotation at times with varying break. Slider was tighter with flat break in upper half of zone. Split is best secondary pitch with late action at bottom of zone at 76-77 mph. High Follow in 2017 class with sturdy build that will continue to add strength and size. Knee to knee trigger into short stride. Stiff lower half in swing. Lower launch position with hands. Slight uphill swing plane causing some top spin at contact. Pull approach with decent strength in bat. 78 mph exit velocity off tee. Easy actions at third base. Solid glove. Ability to make routine. Shows ability on backhand play. Has arm strength. Pie arm action across with cut action on ball. 85 mph arm strength across.
Quad City Open 12/14/14
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Thick physical sturdy build. Body projects to get bigger and stronger. Good rhythm and sequence to delivery. Gathers well and his balanced over the rubber. Throws from high ¾ pie arm slot with long arm action creating occasional sink. Tends to land open causing him to miss arm side. Direction though is good towards home plate. Fastball is heavy thrown at 81-85 at this event in December. At times will be on slide of breaking ball causing flat spin. Splitter is advanced for a player his age with good depth. Overall High Follow in 2017 class and will be up towards the top when state wide rankings are released.
