5/16/18 - Strong and fit, Conine has trimmed up really well for his draft season. A noticeable result of his well-known work ethic. His swing is similar to Kinneman’s in many ways, but Conine doesn’t extend through the ball nearly as well. He rolls after contact, not letting his bottom hand get through the ball. Looked like it forced his top hand to follow his shoulder and roll over earlier than it needs to. As a pull hitter he has struggled to make consistent, hard contact this spring, especially against lefties (.208/.339/.312) with a 25% strikeout rate. He has slugged much better against righties (.265/.400/.590) this season. Both splits are in stark contrast to last spring at Duke (.446/.537/.923) against lefties and (.223/.368/.338) vs. righties. Who knows what this difference will mean five years from now, but something has definitely changed with his approach and/or swing mechanics in the past 12 months. As a runner, he is slow out of the box due to his swing, running 4.37 down the line on an E-6. Underway, he ran average with effort to his gait. In right field he showed average range and an above average arm. Despite his offensive struggles this spring, he remains a strong prospect due to his history, bloodlines and makeup. The latter two will benefit him greatly during his professional career. Conine profiles as a corner outfielder with power over hit ability. Look for him to be drafted during the early rounds of Day 2.
4/18/18 - 6’1/200, L/R, Junior. Strength throughout his frame. Shows athleticism in the outfield and an above average arm. Stands tall at the plate with an aggressive, pull side approach. There is some length, but has above average bat speed and showed above average pull side power in batting practice. Was 0-for-4 with a strikeout and the length exposed with some swing and miss.
3/14/18 - 6-1, 200. L/R. Junior. Lean, strong frame. Strength in lower half, wrists and hands. Put together well. Plus bat speed. Takes aggressive swings. Showed swing/miss tendencies in two games; susceptible to offspeed stuff. Gets long. Solid pre-pitch rhythm in his hands, takes a medium stride. Stayed compact and hit a laser home run to right field. 112 mph exit velo at 18 degree launch. Hard contact on single off left field wall, thrown out at second base trying to stretch it. Average runner. 4.25 down the line on a fielder’s choice. Mostly pull approach. 2-for-8 with a home run and three strikeouts across two games.
