5/20/15 - Big body with a big arm. FB was 90-93 with a long loose whippy arm from a ¾ slot. A tough angle against right handed hitters. He showed a fringy CV at 72-76 mph and a CHG at 80-85 mph. The knock on West in the past has been his inability to throw strikes consistently and repeat his delivery. However, this weekend he put 2 innings together where he pounded the strike zone with power stuff and ended up with the East squad MVP.
8-20-2018: Six-foot-five, 245 pounds with a wide, durable pitching frame. Repeatable delivery with low effort actions. Stays tall and creates leverage. Shows consistent extension over stiff front leg. Arm swing has some length as it gets to high three-quarter release. Fastball sits 88-90 mph, tops at 91. Minimal life or movement. Finds a way to consistently miss barrels by creating a tough downward angle. Flashed curveball at 70-72 mph. Still developing more consistent shape/depth with the offering. Best secondary pitch is straight changeup at 81-84. While the CH grades out to average, it plays up due to West’s ability to effectively tunnel it with his FB. After missing his first two seasons (2016, 2017) at Pitt due to injury, he had a productive redshirt-sophomore season in 2018. Appears to be on track to regaining the form he showed as a prep righty in 2015. (D Jurik)
