By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting
Russell Schwertfeger had a very solid junior season hitting .402 with 10 doubles, 3 triples and a home run. The unsigned senior also scored 27 runs and stole 21 bases without getting caught.
Currently ranked No. 17 in the WV Class of 2014, Schwertfeger has shown well at two PBR events. The switch-hitter ran a 7.06 60-yard dash and topped all outfield arms at the WV Open ID Showcase in July with throws of 88 mph. Schwertfeger also went 2-for-5 with two triples over the course of two games in the Fall College Prospect Program. He demonstrated the ability to use all fields and was able to drive the baseball to the opposite field gap from the left side of the plate.
Schwertfeger is currently playing basketball prior to heading back to the baseball diamond for his senior season. The talented outfielder appears primed for a big spring and is likely to receive considerable interest from college programs still searching for a player of his abilities.
