Andy Hoyer won't be going very far away to play his college baseball; the Charleston Catholic senior is a University of Charleston recruit. He also won't be going very far to try to help his Irish teammates win a state championship when Charleston Catholic opens up state tournament play on Thursday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander has put up solid offensive numbers this season hitting .404 with 10 stolen bases. It is on the mound however, that Hoyer makes his greatest impact. Going into sectional play Hoyer had compiled a 7-1 record with 63 strikeouts in 49.2 innings of work. With two wins remaining to earn a coveted state title, Hoyer's right arm is likely to factor heavily into Charleston Catholic's success.
