Revisiting our 2014 Preseason Team Rankings: Class AAA
December 8, 2014
By Greg Williams
West Virginia Director of Scouting
This week we will be grading ourselves on our preseason team rankings to see what we got right and where we were off base in 2014. We will begin today with the big school classification, Class AAA. A total of 35 schools make up the state's class of schools with the largest enrollments.
2014 Pre-season ClasS AAA Top Five
1. Hurricane
2. Cabell Midland
3. Woodrow Wilson
4. Hedgesville
5. Wheeling Park
What We Got Right
Hurricane (29-7) rode a dominant pitching staff from Preseason No. 1 to a state championship. Preseason No. 5 Wheeling Park were nearly the Redskins' championship game opponent, but fell to Riverside in an extra inning semifinal game for the ages.
Where We Were Off Base
Washington (23-5) rode VMI recruit, RHP Jared Silva to the semifinals. Not only did we not have Washington picked to win their region, we did not have them listed among schools that we felt were in the hunt going into the season.
Riverside, the Class AAA runners-up, got real hot at the right time. The Warriors one six one run games down the stretch to vault themselves into the state finals after not appearing in our preseason poll
Final Thoughts
We did a fairly solid job here, although we won't pat ourselves on the back too much. Class AAA has just 35 teams and picking a team with the depth of pitching that Hurricane had was a pretty solid choice. Add in preseason No. 5 Wheeling Park and we had two of the final four teams standing listed in our preseason top five spots.
