South Charleston 4, George Washington 2
Much anticipation surrounded yesterday's match-up of the No. 3 and No. 6 ranked teams in Class AAA. No. 3 South Charleston brought an impressive 11-2 record into the mid-season battle of ranked teams and did not disappoint.
Early on the story was pitching as the Black Eagles' Tyler Abbott and the Patriots' Jeremy Graley posted zeros on the board through the first two innings. South Charleston broke through to plate three runs in the top of the 3rd on three hits, an error, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The damage could have been much worse but Graley was able to induce a bases loaded ground out to end the inning.
George Washington wasted little time responding as Ben Arthur walked to start the bottom of the inning. Following a ground out, Grant Wells singled and stole second and Josh Petit walked to load the bases with one out. Druw Bowen followed with a single to score Arthur and a walk to Aidan Johnson cut the lead to 3-2. Much like the top of the inning Abbott was able to escape further damage by getting two strikeouts with the bases still loaded to end the inning.
South Charleston added an insurance run in the 5th inning when Trevor Sampson led off with a double, advanced to 3rd on a passed ball and came home on a sacrifice fly by Isaiah Moss.
Abbott went the distance for the win allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Graley also worked a complete game taking the loss on six hits with eight strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.
Corey Lanier (2-4, R) and Sampson (2-4, 2B, R, RBI) led the Black Eagles offense. Bowen (2-3, 2B, RBI) was the loan Patriot with multiple hits.
