Left handed hitting catchers are typically at a premium and Mitch Mallek is one that helped lead Stevens Point to a State Runner-Up finish in 2013. Mallek is 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and has displayed a solid stroke from the left side with quick hands and flashing pull side pop.
Mallek, a three sport athlete at SPASH, has been racking up awards in both football and wrestling to go along with his baseball prowess.
On the baseball field, Mallek said he has been getting interest from Ripon, St. Mary’s, UW-Stevens Point, Bradley, Carthage, Marian, Northland, Hamline and Iowa Western. He has yet to make a college visit but with that much interest he surely will soon.
Mallek said, “I would like to stay in the Midwest. I am interested in Accounting, Engineering, and Environmental Science.”
According to Mallek he posted a 25 on his ACT while holding a 3.7 GPA .
On top of finishing second in the state at SPASH, Mallek finished the year with a .342 batting average and was selected to second team All-Conference and second team All-District.
Going into his senior year Mallek and the rest of the Panthers should be poised for a big year. With a majority of returning starters from last year’s state runner-up team, the Panthers could be in prime shape to take the title in 2014.
