Preseason Preview: Winnebago Lutheran Academy

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin

Today we will highlight Winnebago Lutheran Academy in our preseason preview. Coach Seibel and the Vikings finished up last season with an impressive record in Division 2 going 19-5 on the year. The Vikings were edged out by Kettle Moraine Lutheran in the conference finishing second in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference with a 14-2 record. This season Coach Seibel is returning five starters in the field with three on the mound. This returning experience should bode well for the Vikings in 2013.

Coach Seibel is counting on a strong pitching staff this season as he returns two frontline senior pitchers in Kevin Seibel and Maustin Otterstatter. Both received 1st Team All-Conference Selections last season as juniors.

Otterstatter is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound right handed pitcher who went 9-2 last season with a 1.17 ERA. The big righty hopes to bolster a Viking rotation and get them back on top of the Wisconsin Flyway conference.

Kevin Seibel is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound righty who coupled with Otterstatter on the mound also compiling an impressive record going 8-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Together the two righties accounted for 17 of the 19 Viking wins in 2012. The two also have a combined career varsity record of 27-5, pretty impressive to have that many wins returning for their senior seasons. A repeat performance of 2012 will surely give Winnebago Lutheran a legitimate shot to contend for a state title.

The Vikings will be fairly young everywhere else on the field. Offensively, outside of Seibel the Vikings will be looking for contributions from many of their young players with limited varsity experience. Seibel is the Vikings main offensive threat as the four year varsity starter will likely break many Winnebago Lutheran career offensive records this year.

With a one-two punch of Otterstatter and Seibel the Vikings should never find themselves out of many games, the only question Coach Seibel and his staff will have to answer is how they will put runs on the board.
